Mono compatibility

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

My stereo mix sounds much worse when checked in mono than I expected.
I included two clips of the same mix in stereo and then in mono (to get mono mix I pressed the mono button in the main bus in Presonus Studio One).
I know about phase issues but in this case the distorted guitars were recorded twice, so I thought there should not be any phase issues if there are two different parts.
All the track contains is drums, a synth and guitars panned full left and right).
Any ideas how to make it sound better in mono?

Phew.... this is a tricky one. I don't mean to be rude but mono compatibility is not as much of an issue as the timing of the guitars against the drums - which is really loose and just makes it feel so messy. I would solve that first.

As for the mono version... true - the guitars are pushed back behind the drums, indicating something is amiss. Even though you've recorded the 2 guitars separately, phase cancellation can still occur. There is also "panning law" to take note of.

Instead of panning 100% hard Left/Right, try %75. Or try using a mono-compatible panner like Pantastic. See if that helps. I'd be keen to hear the difference.

How is that possible? Never heard about that. Can you elaborate?
