There is a lot of stuff that came out of the NESS project http://www.ness.music.ed.ac.uk/archives ... embeddings

The system is so big that needs to be run on GPUs ... you have nonlinearities in the membrane, in the membrane-mallet collision, plus all the connections between subsystems (membrane-air cavity, etc.) Modal synthesis is by no means the only option here: time-domain stuff (e.g. finite differences) can have its own advantadges, for example you have direct access to every point on the grid at all times, making gestural control somewhat natural in this framework (you can change the input-output locations dynamically for example, which you can't do with modes, as you would have to compute a new modal projection at each time step).

You can do smaller gongs with modes, I have a basic model running here https://mdphys.org/plates.html, which could be expanded, and which will definitely end up in a plugin sometime ...

It is possible Zebra 3 might get some of that tech, but that is just a possibility and it will likely be a year+ before there is a Z3 beta

With layering and compression, is it possible to make good sounding snare and kicks of course, for example, i did all the sounds with vital, a plugin by vital audio... I hope it's okay when i post a small audio demo i made some weeks ago...

Vital, Serum and others who have fast envelopes or LFOs, can do this very, very good... EQ, layering and compression do the rest.... https://youtu.be/TKFcjyh9fmg

As does Reason’s Kong. It’s not overly convincing but it’s there.
