looking for a simple vst audio file player that I can load in Cantabile and will preferably start when I hit play in Cantabile and play an audio file that I can play along to.
https://miraxlabs.com/products/vstplayer/ is nice simple and cheap but does not start when I hit play so it does no sync with other sequencers I have going.
Anything that will work? - needs to be able to play files that will be 10-30 mins long

I don't have it myself but it seems to do just what you want
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

thanks, but that is more a tool to actually change what you are doing to match another song - which I guess is using a track as a reference, but going way beyond what I want. I will change the title to avoid this confusion that I did not realise might happen

Ah, sorry. I was confused by the word "reference".

no probs, appreciate you suugested something. I have found a workable solution - use FLStudio as vst within Cantabile - but that is overkill for what I need. Hopefully there is a much lighter solution

(looks like FL cant loop within Cantabile while Cantabile controls the transport which is a drag, )

I use Cantabile for live playing and there's a built in audio file player that you can start with a midi message (I use a pedal to start the audio). Is that what you're looking for or am I misunderstanding? Here's the support page that talks about the media player in Cantabile:

I suspect the key parts here are 'solo and performer only' vs 'free' in the topic subject.

But having tried vstPlayer and discovering it's garbage, and not being able to find any other 'audio player as a vst' plugin, perhaps upgrading to solo would be OP's best option

yes, the "free" bit is important. I will persist with FL Studio as the vst player for a bit and see how that goes

Hi, I released this one years ago for Jeskola Buzz(Windows program), it's called Mediavst. It plays audio/video files and syncs them to song. Therefore It should start to play if you press play in Cantabile. You have to install Directshow codecs for more exotic formats, however MP3/Wav should work out of the box.
