Hey, I can even think of a feature Project 5 had that Bitwig doesn't, and P5 stopped development 15 years ago.

they are obviously some way behind normal linear DAWS like Studio One and Cubase in terms of audio and midi editing and mixing (as is Live) so they have to offer something new and unique to attract a niche audience initially.

You're right in some sense, but also the idea of 'some way behind' sees these things in a fixed linear line.

One of my favorite synths is Borderlands on iOS. It cannot even be played with midi notes. Someone could say it is behind other synths because of it. Yet it is fun and beautiful musical results are easy and fast. To me, it is not behind, but rather different and does not fit on the linear line of expected feature set.

I find Bitwig also like that in various ways. I don't consider it behind DAW's like Cubase, but rather on a different trajectory.

Absolutely, I use Bitwig for things I would not use Studio One for and Visa versa, I also use Renoise and a Polyend Tracker so I am all for breaking out of convention As I also record bands and instrumentalists etc I find Studio One currently more suited to that type of project 'in my opinion'. There will never ever be 'one size fits all' but there is 'the best for you currently', and if you have found it and stopped looking your are one step ahead of most!

It did make me laugh that their negative point was ''-The main selling point (working on a project simultaneously using different computers) isn’t available yet.'' and that was written in 2016 !!

Not as much as I was yesterday to MPC 2.10. The number surprised me so much (I was expecting 2.9 -> 3.0) that when I saw it mentioned on Twitter earlier in the day I totally dismissed it thinking someone dug up an old tweet... Only to have to collect my jaw from the floor few hours later, when I realised what's going on

I had initially bought Bitwig because of its immense modulation capabilities and unique approach to music making, however I intended to use it in combination with Logic because of its strong mixing and mastering capabilities (of which I am not masterful in any way). Once I started diving into it, all I wanted to do was play with Bitwig and I’ve almost forgotten how to use Logic. This may not be a typical use scenario though.

This is something I have been mulling over for quite a few months now.

I am starting to wonder if Bitwig is literally too good for the mass audience.

Not to be elitist but I do wonder if there is an inherent problem in the idea you need to think outside of music to drive the thing.

I've tried out many a DAW over the years but never really could get the hang of the conventional ones - but then again I wasn't tracking a band or doing 'normal' stuff - so maybe that's why it didn't click for me. I fell in love at one point with a weird little DAW called "EnergyXT". It was the first time I'd seen a DAW that treated VSTs in a way similar to how Reason had it's rack where you could literally patch from device to device. Unfortunately EXT never went anywhere so I ended up with Reason, which like - it's got a some stuff that BWS could benefit from - multiple midi lanes for a single "track"? This can be accomplished with grouped tracks and a group of note receivers - but not quite as elegant.

That being said I'd say for those who are composing, exploring, just creating...BWS is hard to beat.

Sure BWS needs stuff like the multiple-midi lanes, a slicer as good as the existing sampler with REX compatibility, better midi editing, etc. That said, it's still heads and shoulders above most other DAWs out there... for some of us.
