Hi! I would like to try one of these guitar kits you get, I'm not skilled enough to make one from scratch, not to save any money, which I probably wont anyway, just to have something I sort of made myself. I'm looking for a flying V, preferably with seven strings, apart from that nothing too complicated. Fixed bridge, two humbuckers or at least space for them. If it works out I'll replace the pick ups and other parts to upgrade it. I'm not going to go for anything too expensive. Any advice?

Until personal testimonials roll in, this might be of interest:

I should probably make one also, I need something very light in weight.
Cheers

Last summer I made my kid a short scale bass with a kit from The Fretwire. The kit cost $160. I probably spent another $80-100 finishing it.

I had to put a fair amount of work into filing down the ends of the frets, but otherwise the quality was pretty decent.

I tried to stain it and do an oil finish. It looked good except that there was a spot in the wood which didn't take to the stain, so I painted it black.

If you are going to build one of these kits, be prepared to know that the actual assembly will take about a tenth of the time that it takes to finish the guitar.

I built a couple of guitars and a few basses.
The difficult part, imo is in the paint/finish
It takes a lot of time and the final result is not on the same level as any commercial brand
That-s probably due to the different quality of industrial wood coatings vs diy stuff (and the process as well)

oh, and the tools they use...
(spray paint vs brush, sanding grain, Nitro Finish, etc. )

Finish.....paint.......??? Nahh....rub in some linseed oil to seal the wood.....put stickers all over it. No one really wants a finished neck anyway.
We jumped the fence because it was a fence not be cause the grass was greener.
