Listened to the song right now, and agree.

No, I'm only going by what others have said on KVR. I'm not intimately familiar with Robert Miles aside from hearing "Children" 1,000,021 times while backpacking Europe the summer of 1996.

That’s very little respect for a man who wrote a song that had a success we’ll never have nor you nor me, which was covered by bands all around the world including jazz bands, and who died a couple of years ago.ghettosynth wrote: ↑Mon Sep 27, 2021 6:19 amIf you didn't already hate cheesy trance.

Robert Miles was just another composer cut down before his time.
Hopefully mainstream success isn't the only barometer to which we will all be judged by?

Sorry, but just no. Millions of people enjoying a song during decades means respect to me.
What is the ”barometer” then ? A few ”experts” saying what’s good and what’s not ?
You’re still free to dislike what you ever want, but respect is a thing.

it has value to you and many others.
That is not to enforce your values on others though. You can't do that!
I am not the music police saying what is good and what is bad.

Well, we agree.
What if I say that Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd is a sh!tty band that produced random sounding cheesy rock songs ?
Their music produce nothing to me. But I respect the fact that they’re a hugely influent band, loved by millions of people. So I’d never say anything bad about them. I’d simply say their music is not for me. No problem, I have millions of songs to listen to.

This chart topping hit could be heard all over the world on radio stations that grandmas listened to. It's also cheesy, like so much italo disco. Plenty of people liked this. It is typical, IMNSHO, of the weird cheese that can explode on the euro charts. It's not just that it's "italo-disco" or that Children is "trance", it's that even though both genres have a high cheese factor, neither of these tracks are very good representations of their genre, and both became popular largely owing to gimmick.

In fact, cheesy trance has its roots in italo-disco cheese. Oh look, this has been covered by Spritney-Bears, all the cheese of the original combined with the double-cheese goodness of the cheesy genres that cheesy trance has evolved into.

Plenty of covers and remixes from people trying to leverage the attention that the original received.

I was absolutely CONVINCED you would use this defense. I expected some Popcorn sh!t or something.
You can't see the difference between a song people love and a song people have fun with. No problem for me.

I learned sweep picking with the Woody Woodpecker theme song. In fact, it's the only song I can sweep pick well.

Here's some era-appropriate ear-bleach for the woodpecker...you're welcome. Such an 80s trainspotting video as well. Sadly, no Kurzweil piano in this one.

A version of the story is that Robert Miles composed this song as a lullaby for his children.
Then it became famous.
I like this story.
Way more than posters who try to own a reputation on the internet by making endless, endless posts every day trying to justify their opinion.

No doubt that it's appealing to small children, and their soccer moms. It wasn't sold in the children's section next to Dr Seuss though, and the liner notes tell you exactly why it was released. It's not just my opinion mate, it's the first listing on this bloke's list of cheesy trance, emphasis mine. Granted, he admits to liking cheese, but also that it's cheese. Ishkur's not so charitable.
Ishkur, always worth a read, had this to say.
https://completement.wordpress.com/2009 ... ce-tracks/Mostly, I like to think that I listen to “good” music. But sometimes, listening to some corny trance tracks from the late-90s/early 00s can be an effective guilty pleasure. The overly dramatic crescendos, the over-the-top samples, and huge build-ups designed to kill ravers – all of them are just so goddamn entertaining. So, listed below for your general perusal are some of my favorites (in something resembling chronological order):

On Robert Miles - Children + similar tracks:
If there is anyone who is responsible for the complete and thorough pussification of Trance, making it offensively lame to the point where not only newbie ravers but also their soccer moms could enjoy it, it's Robert Miles. "Children" has the exclusive accolade as being the #1 rave recruitment song of all time. It's also probably responsible for the embarrassing onslought of banal, melody-driven trance that dominated the last half of the 90s. Hell, I remember Anne Savage playing this f**king song at my very first rave. This isn't trance; this is like that crappy background music on the TV listings channel that tells you what's playing on other channels.

Yes, try to justify all you want with all the quotes you want, to justify you're right my friend.
True, you'll always find people who wrote bad things about the song. Who cares ?
You still lack respect to a song millions of people love. You're free to dislike it, of course. But don't you have better things to do in your life than trashing a song you dislike ?
