I am considering an analog drum synth(machine) but don't know what would be best for me.
One idea is two DFAMs synced for L-R channels but that is an expensive option. I am not very knowledgeable on drum machines other than I don't want just a sample-based unit- I have a circuit tracks I don't really like because the knobs are guesswork for pitching.
In the past, I have used a lot of pitched toms etc. mixed R-L in stereo and would like to be able to control envelopes in real time. Anyone more experienced with hardware percussion around, what works for you?

I certainly don’t know what would be best for you either, or what type of sound you want. Check out Elektron RYTM though. Different sound engines and very flexible. Easy to select any sound and adjust envelopes. Also very quick to reload the sound after adjusting it, so you don’t have to manually return to your settings.

It depends what kind or drums sounds you want. But I think your idea is great, the DFAM sounds stellar. Even pricier (and rabit-hole-r) is Eurorack which will give you the same analog grain if you're easy with plugging cables.
The Volca series is nice too, good analog sounds for cheap.
For super crazy stuff, there's the SOMA drum machine that I forgot the name (same company that does the Lyra drone thing).
Note that I never had any of the above in my hands (yet ! :)).

Actually it is things like this:

That make me wonder ....
I am also eagerly awaiting the release of the Beringer RD-9

So, the perfect drum machine would have a good mix of the classic drum sounds as well as the ability to create some interesting new stuff... I strangely miss programming drums in my workstation, but those samples are far too limited by today's standards.

Just watched loopop's video on the PULSAR 23  it would be something to get for the ultimate synth that can be a drum (or four). Trying to sync recordings to multiple tracks to get pans might be a pain though.

Do you want the machine for synthesizing single drum hits or for creating drum patterns? If you just want to synthesize single drums, the Elektron Analog Four Or the Elektron Digitone are amazing. Not as easy to sequence drum patterns though.

Dunno about "perfect" but this is more interesting to me than a lot of dedicated drum machines. Two sequencers into one (powerful) voice module.

(Digitone looks sick though, would like one of those...)

I feel like if I just wanted single drums to record one track at a time, I should pay less than what the Elektron goes for. I mean, you can use any analog synth to make drum-like sounds. I am currently exploring what my Sequential Pro3 can do with short decay times with the wavetable OSC 3 as a hihat or tom-like hit.

I think the custom FM engine on my Prologue is enough for FM percussive sounds as well as noise hits.
Here is one bi-timbrel patch:

So any drum synth I get has to have more than a standard analog drum, FM drum, hat hit set up.
I have also ruled out anything without midi sync to my DAW. So no DFAM, Pulsar23, or Lyra.

The Elektron Rytm is an excellent drum machine... sounds great and quite versatile.

I feel like I need to get one Elektron instrument.
-Or I could get what Ricky Tinez makes look sooo good:

I already want a Zen delay, I could get a Holy Trinity of erica synths gear: DB-01, LXR-02, and the Zen Delay
Or not

Well, I got an Eowave Quadrantid Swarm. It has a percussion part to it that I love although it is definitely not a drum synth. It can accompany drums well, like this example with the Circuit Tracks as main drum track:

Now, I think my new device can be used to transfer midi sync into a DFAM via using its midi IN and sending clock CV to the DFAM. I have never done this before and would be nervous about time delay problems. DFAM does sound great though, as this video demonstrates-

Analog RYTM is a beautiful instrument.

There is not perfect instrument unless it fits perfectly your personal needs, what of course is extremely subjective. That said, for variety of sounds and extensive control over the sequenced parameters, I’d give my vote to the Analog RYTM, too. If fun, hands on experience, open design and wow-factor are needed, take a look at the Soma Pulsar 23. Both instruments couldn’t be more different, but both are amazing drum machines and, what can be also important: both can be way more than a drum machine. :-)
