Anyhoo, feeling a bit sorry for the Steinberg Forum mods at the moment. What I picked up was that one of the reason for changing the way it works is that much of their support work was to do with the dongles and e-licenser. Whether that means that in future most of their support issues will be the new system remains to be seen.

Personally I'm hold off my hysteria until I see what is actually implemented.

reFX is allegedly banning users (to open further support tickets) that ask for Nexus2 refund or free upgrade to N3 due to the fact that reFX can't ensure anymore proper customer service for (broken) eLicenser issues. These stories are one of the reasons I never upgraded to N3: being a monthly affair they can end any license at any time and since there is no smoke without fire...

I'd think more companies could find a way to dump some heavy encryption on a standard USB thumb drive like waves did. I think they (Steinberg/Yamaha) kinda made a mistake when they bought out the copy protection platform and didn't make it "Steinberg Only". I'm curious what all the other eLicenser authorized plugin companies are gonna do moving forward.

From what I can understand it's Steinberg that make the e-licencer dongle and that at some point, years down the line, the servers will be switched off. I asked about 3rd party users like Waldorf and Steinberg said I will need to ask Waldorf about what they are doing. I think Korg also used the e-licencer dongle in the past?

So I looked at Waldorf and XILS and with Waldorf (I have PPG 3.V) you just register with their system (haven't tried it yet, still on eLicenser) and XILS is also transferable to iLok (for a fee). I have lots of other licences on iLok so no issue for me there. Not sure how to move it over yet, though.

So for me going over to Studio One means I only lose Padshop Pro (or whatever it's called now) and Halion SE3 (free), unless they are outside the new Steinberg licensing system.

All of Waldorf's plugins use a serial number now. You can convert your eLicenser key to the new system: https://waldorfmusic.weclapp.com/webapp ... qId=160820

Gadget Fiend wrote: Thu Nov 11, 2021 9:36 am None of this copy protection bullshit would be necessary if Cubase was not primarily a Windows program. It's only because of the rampant piracy on the Windows platform that Steinberg must go to such lengths to protect its intellectual property. Mac users for the most part buy their software. Unfortunately, they must pay the price and suffer the inconvenience caused by PC hackers.
Remember when Kanye West posted a screenshot of himself (presumably) trying to pirate Serum on a Mac?
Kanye West is a bi-polar narcissistic fool. Despite his millions, he would of course try to crack Serum. He thinks the world owes him something for his "genius." And thus he doesn't feel like he should have to pay for software. Given his mental illness, he is obviously not your average hacker.

People have stated in this thread that iLok is an acceptable alternative to eLicenser. Sure, at least some companies who use the iLok system allow multiple authorizations to additional iLok USB keys. But what if you lose one or more of those keys that have thousands of dollars worth of software on them.

iLok's solution to this scenario is their "Zero Downtime" program where they force you to basically pay insurance on the software you own. The whole system is a scam to get you to pay periodic insurance fees.

I am not a fan of 'cloud' solutions either. For security reasons I do not want to have my development PC connected to the internet/network.
What is the final version of Wavelab that still runs with the dongle?

That's true of other companies such as VSL too. The consequences of piracy is the gift that keeps on giving.
