Free/cheap or physically modeled horn instrument? (Sample library OK too…)

I’m usually very happy to pay for my instruments and almost always donate to things I use frequently, but in this case it’s probably going to be a one-off tune. I’m not generally a horns guy… frankly I don’t even like synth brass patches, but this song is sort of begging for it. Kind of a James Brownesque kind of thing. It doesn’t have to be super detailed or great, like SWAM Brass (I’ve got their SWAM Cello which I love a lot).

I believe this is physically modeled and as far as I remember, it sounds quite good.

If 32bit is OK, DSK have one.

Wow, the SWAM horn thingy is 250 euros, and ideally you need to have a very capable Midi controller in order to make use of all the fine details.
Are you looking for a single instrument or a horn section?

do you have any kind of sampler? even GarageBand has some passable basic brass…
have seen zero-g phantom horns for <$20 before. It’s loops not a sample library per se but includes James brown style loops….

Air's Xpand has 80 brass sounds, some of them pretty good.
Xpand is rather cheap...
The level is like with these two patches:

I know. I really do want the SWAM collection, but wow. If I used horns in a lot of my songs, I’d be all about it, but I can’t see me using it much after I’m done with this track.

I’ve got Kontakt, UVI Falcon, and TAL. I’m not sure loops would work because I have specific lines in mind.

No offense but I tried that and IMO it was terrible.Erisian wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 9:34 pm If 32bit is OK, DSK have one.

OP: by "horn" you do mean "French horn" or are you open to brass generally?
If the latter, this is an OUTSTANDING free trumpet. Better than paid ones I have heard. https://www.norrlandsamples.com/
If you're looking for some passable brass generally, check some of the free orchestral libraries like VSCO, etc. They tend to be sections or ensembles though, not sure about solo instruments.

I think the DSK one will run in Bitwig. Could be good. Thanks.Erisian wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 9:34 pm I believe this is physically modeled and as far as I remember, it sounds quite good.

I mean what you’d find in a James Brown or Earth Wind And Fire track. I guess trumpet, trombone and sax (which I’m aware isn’t a horn)mixyguy2 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 25, 2022 2:31 amNo offense but I tried that and IMO it was terrible.Erisian wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 9:34 pm If 32bit is OK, DSK have one.

You will find all of the above in such tracks.
For a very basic sax but IMO a good general sound and free, DVS Sax is worth a look. A cheap one (only $20, $10 on their half off sales) is Embertone's Sensual Sax, very good IMO, more expressive.
8Dio has IMO a very good brass ensemble, the "lite" version if you get on a half off sale (they have many sales) is $30ish
