Multitap delay recommendations? Also, shouldn't everyone be using one?

Has anyone used multitap delays to clean up their delay tails? For example, if you only need something to repeat 3 times, then that means no need for a delay that goes on seemingly forever muddying the mix.

Also, can we talk about ValhallaDelay? Great SOUNDING delay, but it is particulary bad. I'm never satisfied with the delay's volume slope. In other words ValhallaDelay delay tails ends too soon and each repeat too quiet from the last or if you crank up the feedback (to get louder delay taps) the delay lasts forever and that's no good either.

So what about a multitap delay instead? Precise control over each tap. Would be nice to have some randomization features to create subtle pitch wobble for warmth.

There's Ricochet by Audio Damage, part of their recent legacy freebie haul. Can be a bit small on modern displays but sounds good and is, y'know, free. :) I use it exactly like you say, just a couple of distinct repeats, usually panned to separate them from the dry signal further.

Best for precise stuff i know: Blue Cat Audio Late Replies. It’s not great for modulating everything from within though.

Never tried UVI Relayer as i don‘t use ilok.

If the unlikely should finally happen though, and Ohmboyz Infinity should finally get released in a non bug ridden form, we‘d probably have a new king

Otherwise, as mentioned, Ricochett is good. The PSP 608MD too.
And lots of people enjoy d16 Tekturon.

And of course your DAW might actually already feature one too
The GAS is always greener on the other side!

I'm not generally a fan of multitaps that much. Valhalla can go on a bit, but it also has 4 taps depending on what mode you set it to. 4 taps, no feedback...does what you want it to. Can't remember off the top of my head how much control you have over the volume of each tap though - likely other delays do it better.

Form memory D16 have a few multitaps. TBH any 8 tap delay should do what you want.
Soundtoys Echoboy is my most obvious contender. Good control of taps.
Waves do a multitap with good tap control...but Waves so y'know...twats.
PSP 608 - good tap control. PSP likely have others too.

Pretty sure the market is flooded with decent multitap offerings...I'm absolutely sure every single one of them will be mentioned here. :hihi:

Valhalla has Ubermod for creative multitap options.

Timeless 3 has full control over taps, I think. I remember Logic used to have a good stock multitap delay, I assume it’s still there?

For short, panned and pitched taps I still rate Doubler by Waves. Simple fast tool that does a useful thing with no fuss.

The Cubase multi-tap delay is pretty amazing and deserves a mention

Not in Ableton v9. Even if it did i'd be surprised if it was as good (imo) as the 608.
I also use Reaper, didn't check it yet but so far i do most of my creating in Ableton. That could change over time. now i'm curious...

No multitap delay in Reaper. Glad i have the MD608, it's a lot of fun to use.

in Ableton, you can just slap one together by bunging a bunch of basic delays into parallel chains in a rack.
