How do you feel about this?
IMO, it's fairly straightforward:

If someone does not want to see their track commented on: disable comments.
If someone does want comments, just not anything critical: say so explicitly, or consider doing something else.
otherwise: anything goes as long as it is civilized at least, preferably constructive and certainly pertaining to the track it is placed with.

Indeed ! It also sucks to see tracks of supposed lesser quality being avoided in commenting. How does that help people improve ?

I welcome any comments. I can accept that. Honest comments allow me to look at my track from different points of view, but also to learn more about the characters of the commenting participants, so that in the future I can write my comments in their preferred form.
With new members who have not yet proved themselves but have not written what comments they welcome, it will always be a little more difficult. It seems we've already had a few who left OSC (presumably) because of comments and the position of their track.

Post

I quite look forward to the comments on my tracks. This is only my second time on this and after coming last (with a couple of folk disqualified below me) last month, I'd like to think I applied the advice to this month's track! I'll find out in a few days...

When it comes to commenting, I'm kind of torn between "such and such feature of a track was good" and commenting on things like the mix and sound selection. I sometimes wonder how helpful the first sort of comment is (but can't stop commenting like that) and I often don't feel experienced enough to make the second sort of comment, especially if my own track is lacking mix-wise.

Post

I also welcome and am grateful for any and all comments. I'm really glad you OSC peeps are so active with the comments. I should be commenting myself more.

What a nice round this time!
If anyone is interested in the sounds I made, here they are. Don't know if you need any more presets surge team, but feel free to include mine of you want to!

Like this post if you think the voting should be out of 10 instead of 5.

Voted. Thank you to those who commented on mine. I've done a so so job commenting myself sorry to say. Dealing with some strange health issues. Also banshee 3 year old doesn't want to give up the computer. I will try to do better next time.

Post

Voted. Some very nice tracks, some missed opportunities, some pretty low efforts. Overall I felt like I dealt way lower scores than previous OSCs...

Yes, I have already made this suggestion a couple of times. 1-10 or 1-5 with an interval of 0.5 (it may be more familiar after the five-point system). It probably won't be until we get too good! :o

While I agree a 1-10 voting might improve some things, I would proffer the current UI with 10 boxes to drag to would be awful to use, so a new UI would be needed (like click the number of stars or something).

Do we need the nuance? I get the impression that the original intent of the voting, is for us to sort them roughly into five buckets, and then the statistics formed by lots of us voting will provide the decimal points.

As a slightly relevant aside, I've seen folk here say they vote in narrower range than 1-5, suggesting 3-5, or heavily biased towards 5.

Post

I usually use the range 2-5 (reserving the 1 bin for my own track!). However, if I hear a track(s) which does not fit my criteria for the 2 bin, I will drop it in the 1 bin!

Nice idea, but it would probably be very hard to see your ranking of the challenge unless the UI also sorted your marked tracks into the 10 bins (stars!) as well. As it is you can see easily who's in what bin, and can move them around of course.

We have had this discussion many times - just extending the range to 1-7 (as in a Likert 1-7 scale), might give a little more nuance!
