I gave like 30 tracks a 4. Very boring scoring system. Maybe I'll do an even distribution next time and really piss off ten people

Post

I have voted, and only used 85% of my budget of 'really' words so some of you got some extra reallys towards the end.

Tier Zoo only needs 6 ;)

Sometimes I try to do a normal distribution curve with the caveat that a 5 is not necessarily 5 times better than a 1!! I've had a number of 1's myself in the past, so am quite happy to deal out a 1 when needed. :D

Humph! I didn't get even one "really" ... :hihi:

For me it's kinda like this:

5 - awesome stuff
4 - great stuff
3 - missed opportunities
2 - low effort
1 - my track

Mine's sorta like that! The "awesome stuff" takes into account composition within genre, technical stuff - aka sound design, mixing, mastering, my own subjective feeling - aka did I like it a lot?

A track which is purely presets, a bit of tinkering around on a keyboard or piano roll, no soundstage, no dynamics, poor mastering is a "2" or sometimes a "1"!!

My voting is done. It seems to have taken a lot longer than last time. I am predicting that scores will be very close for most of the field.

Wow, that seems harsh to me but I guess we have our own tastes and thresholds for them. To me as long as it is musical and is not too unpleasant to listen to (unless that was the point) everything deserves a "pass" which I round to a 3. I didn't find anything that deserved under a 3 this time but I did have 1 last time which I gave a 2.

Yes of course it goes much deeper than just that. I just wanted to give an overview. But I like discovering what people do with sound and if it's at all reflective of something intentional, or even something intelligent, then it only takes a small detail to push it from 4 to 5.

As far as just tinkering with a keyboard with presets, I guess that could work depending on how good the tinkering is, but if there's no dynamics and no soundstage, etc, that's a 2 for me as well.

I don't really like scoring with 1. I understand its purpose but I don't think I should be giving out 1s.

To be fair in the past years of commenting on 100 OSC's I have only given a "1" a few times. I think one time was when it was surmised a midi track from the internet was simply rendered with a few presets, nothing else! Anyone could find a file to do this, so it broke the rule to start with, by not being "composed for the challenge", and then was just awful!!!

What the heck!? I must have missed this, do you remember more details?

I put a lot of 1 and 2, a little less than 3, 4 and finally very little 5. This time I only put a track with 5 points.
