This was by design, because otherwise you could have naming collisions with other modules in your patch. If you imported some third-party macro and it just happened to have the same label somewhere, it would break your patch.
On saying that, I know this system does need improvement, and some kind of global bussing in on the agenda, which would allow you to send to and from anywhere, and also allow you to package up multiple connections into a single bus.
