Ambient is the epitome of consubstantiality.
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

This is all so silly. Ambient music is clearly defined by its name. Think of ambient light or sound. They are defined as not having a clearly perceived point of focus or origin.
Of course, as always, few things are purely anything. A pop tune can have ambient qualities, and a lot of what I see labeled ambient is just instrumental music with less focus on structure.
Also, the idea of a synthesizer being more suited for ambient music than any other synthesizer or instrument is ridiculous. Ambient music is made by using compositional techniques and can use anything that makes sound. You might as well ask, “what instrument is best for classical music?”

I actually discovered ambient by accident. I played guitar in rock & ska bands for years, but after I became homeless due to mental changes, I was no longer interested in music.
After I got on disability and a place to live, it took a few years before the music bug bit me again. I thought about joining a band, then realized what a hassle they can be, so I went solo with electronica.
First, I dabbled with house and garage. However, because I had no intention of singing, I looked into instrumental genres.
I wasn't interested in trance (too fast), but I did discover downtempo, psychill, psybient and ambient. I realized I could create full albums without singing one word. Plus, chill music soothes my soul and calms my fragile nerves.

If you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance, baffle 'em with bullshit.
