Also obxd was originally programmed by 2dat, under GPL, afaik. Most parts still are 2dat. So changing the license to commerical imho is illegal.

We ALWAYS had that centainty. OB-Xd was always free, since 2DAT first created it. And noone else can change the license, since HE is the original creator. It was YOU who was in doubt.kivier wrote: Sat Dec 17, 2022 9:40 pm discoDSP provides VST2 binary. But, now we have the certainty that OB-Xd is completely free: even commercial use. I repeat, we have the source code and we can compile/building to any format in any OS (Linux, MacOS and Windows).
Just for the records: I have version 2.5 running (file date 16/09/2021). I think current version is 2.10 (weird numbering. If there is a version 2.10, then the previous one should be 2.05 and not 2.5, but anyway). I have both VST2 and VST3.
I downloaded the current installer, and in fact it only installs VST2. But since I already have both versions, and both are running OK, I'm good.

I feel that there will be an exodus away from OB-Xd now that lines are more clearly defined and the true colours are shining through
That's OK because there are plenty of other great options out there without the BS

No, you have to purchase a license, use 2Dat version or compile the sources yourself.mabian wrote: Sun Dec 18, 2022 10:20 am Clear question that needs a clear answer: Earning money with a song in which the plugin has been used is commercial usage or not?
2Dat granted us a commercial license.Hanz Meyzer wrote: Sun Dec 18, 2022 10:38 am Also obxd was originally programmed by 2dat, under GPL, afaik. Most parts still are 2dat. So changing the license to commerical imho is illegal.
Free demo: no commercial use allowed.chk071 wrote: Sun Dec 18, 2022 10:39 am Nope. I have no idea what I'm allowed to do and what I'm not allowed to do as a user.
Registered version: commercial use allowed.

Actually, for me it's because NOTHING is clearly defined that I'm going to stay far away now.digitalboytn wrote: Sun Dec 18, 2022 10:40 am I feel that there will be an exodus away from OB-Xd now that lines are more clearly defined and the true colours are shining through
Just yesterday the opposite was written in another post, that's been edited this morning accordingly to the 180° direction change.
Pity.

So it IS commercial usage.
I can buy a license to obey the commercial usage constraints of the DiscoDSP version, use 2Dat version or compile myself the sources.
So, regarding the DiscoDSP new license asset, using the plugin in a song that is sold IS commercial usage.
Thanks,
Mario

The commercial agreement between 2Dat and discoDSP was given today, I apologise about the 24 hour time frame confusion.
Using discoDSP OB-Xd in a record producing financial gain requires purchasing a license.
To avoid paying for this license you can use 2Dat release or compile the source code yourself.

I think you are missing some points:discoDSP wrote: Sun Dec 18, 2022 10:49 am The commercial agreement between 2Dat and discoDSP was given today, I apologise about the 24 hour time frame confusion.

1. Original release is completely free, as you acknowledged.
3. Your previous releases didn't have any constraints, AFAIK.
3. You are stating that using the discoDSP free version for commercial purposes is illegal... but ONLY FROM NOW ON.
4. To my understand, no rules can have retrograding effects, which means that previous versions are not under these constraints, since the license terms were different, and ONLY NOW were you granted commercial rights.
5. If what you say is true, then why not include ALL versions (VST3, AU, AAX) in the "demo"?
5. To ALL: Use Surge XT. It has the OB-Xd filter, and is a much more pwerful synth. And it is FREE.
You have been accused of shady behavior in the past, and the current move will damage you more than probably letting things as they were before, IMO. And I agree with others - it will put people away of OB-Xd, which was a labor of collective love and collaboration among the KVR community (myself included).
BTW: Current version of Cubase still allows to use VST2 plug-ins, so that's not a problem for Cubase users.

Hi fmr, thanks for reaching out.
We paid a commercial license to 2Dat, the original owner. This means discoDSP OB-Xd, not others, is not tied to the original GPL3 anymore, which grants certain restrictions not allowed previously.
In reality almost nothing has changed for the end user as AU/VST can still be used for free being the only restriction requiring a license for commercial purposes.
Indeed previous version binaries are still tied to GPL3 but be aware that the blobs, assets and resources have always been copyrighted to discoDSP and legally you're only allowed to distribute the plugin files without anything else in case you want to.
We are working on exciting new updates that will make everyone enjoy our software even more and I do think the current move will bring better and greater features for OB-Xd.
Cheers,
George.

Unfortunately, the lines are pretty blurred in this regard nowadays... Imagine someone uses (the free version of) Obxd in a monetarized Youtube video which is supposed to explain the basics of subtractive synthesis. I guess it's prohibited to do that?
I understand the bickering with the license as the synth was originally a open source freeware, and you have to abide to the original license, but, the context in which the plugin is used can be pretty vague.
