Damn, I just noticed that I think I opened this thread in the wrong forum (hardware). I really meant to open it in the (software) Instruments forum. If a moderator can move this there, that'd be great.

Watched that really nice set of tutorials on NI Reaktor and played around with the free demo. I like the Game of Life idea a lot. However, I sort of dislike the synth rhythm sounds of Reaktor. I learned how I could tweak the sounds, but I dislike that whole synth engine.
So, is there a VST that sort of does Game of Life kinda evolving cells stuff that I can map onto any VSTi I want? Or is there at least a way to map NI Reaktor onto a different VSTi?
Would be cool for instance to have Game of Life cells trigger MicroTonic sounds.

Sorry to dig up a nearly year-old thread, but I would also be very interested in something like this for OS X. I am specifically looking for an app or AU that would allow me to keep a very basic back-beat going but randomly drop in hits in different places, and evolve each time through the loop.
Stochastik Drum Machine is very close - the basic idea being to assign a probability to each hit - but it won't do odd time signatures, and it hasn't been updated in a year. Would also need MIDI-out to record or Save and MIDI export to capture those great moments.
Maybe even a random MIDI note generator as an AU to trigger samples. Not sure.

Perhaps Audio modern Playbeat 3? It triggers samples within, but also has MIDI out.

Audiomodern Playbeat 3 might be worth a look or two. It creates ever-evolving beats.

Amplify Groovebox is the best for ios iphone - ipad.
They have a computer version of it but it is audio only.
You can save the midi and audio files to an ableton live project file, or separate track files for other daws.
It's also very inexpensive for the full version.
There are plenty of drum sound packs available for purchase as well.

The next iteration of Playbeat will expand on the Pitch function. Right now, the pitch randomly selects notes based on the interval you've chosen. In the future, those pitches can be set to a scale. I've experimented with it by importing a C-note pluck tone. It works fine.
Now, those random notes set to a specific range and scale, randomly and continuously generating melodies where the notes are flammed, panned, ratcheted, etc. would make a really funky generative synth. Not to mention the fact they plan to expand on Sample Edit as well. Should be interesting.

Sigh. Yet another Max For Live device to drool over. This, Hypermorph, and a fancy complex sequencer whose name I've forgotten, makes me want to give Ableton a try.
