Did HALion use to be a sampler only and now at version 7 became also an FM synth?

No. It use to be a sampler, a wave table, a va, a spectral, and granular. 7 added tales and FM lab and a dedicated dx7 / tx81z engine

Wrong, 7 also added the spectral oscillator, decompose (from Groove Agent), a new modulation system and several effects. Before 7 less complex versions of the spectral oscillator were available in Backbone and Padshop.

OK it added more than what I said but how is it wrong 😕

Holy moly. i am comparing it vs Kontakt for the funs via yt-vidoes (as i am sure many done before me) right now it seems like HALion offers much more in general but less popular?

Kontakt not even close to hal 7, no. Just the pure Yamaha FM engine is worth alone to buy if you FM enthusiast. U can select dx7, tx81z, and fm-x. All with exact Yamaha replication. Or create from scratch what you want for operator and modulator and algorithm.
Plus ofc all sample library, plus Va engine, wavetable with option to modulate each wave of the table, then ofc granular and spectral. As soon I get some more moneys I buy it.

NI has the content established from years ago I guess.

It's much easier for HALion users to put libraries out so that HALion Sonic/SE users could use them for free - something that you can't do with Kontakt Player, so HALion's ability to share is actually greater too....

But I wonder if that somehow goes against Steinberg when it comes to third party commercial sound library creators? i.e. how easy is it to secure your IP with HALion?

Maybe that's something that NI has better sown up, particularly as no reliance on something like the eLicenser as HALion had in the past.

My wording was questionable, you thought that former versions of Halion already included the spectral oscillator which is wrong as it was only added with version 7.

You could just open HALion standalone :)
Well, let's better testing in plugin form please, for so to speak actual condition, without dividing usage at cores.

So, any public/free user-made HALion library can be played with HALion Sonic ?

Yes, it may be a better platform but it had dongle copy protection which pretty much limited its use to Cubase users...that has now changed so we will see if its use increases...

Also Steinberg so them selves no favours in my opinion with their pre-sets- they range from old GM type stuff from a decade ago to some really amazing stuff (but from the last version)

They didn't bother with any new 'Halion 7' pre-sets that show off the new features like the modulation system or spectral synths (which has 0 pre-sets!)...OK, you have the new FM LAB pre-sets and a string instrument with pre-sets, but nothing that uses these in 'combination'; with other oscillators in layers and with the new modulation stuff- nothing to show the real power of HALion 7...missed opportunity to open with a HALOPN 7 Bank of just really good stuff...
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S88MK3, S1, BWS, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6 Pro3, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone II, OP1-F, OPXY, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!
