Again, it might be OK for less demanding users but the lack of customisation/optimisation makes it harder to get PC like performance. e.g. The nVidia drivers for my Quadro card at work have presets to optimise performance for individual applications. So (if I remember to) switch from the After Effects preset to the Cinema 4D preset when I am working in C4D, the performance difference is noticeable. OTOH, Apple has decided on my behalf that dual monitor performance is far more important to me than flat-out performance, so we all have to live with that, and the generally inferior performance of AMD's graphics, on macOS.
that's not basic hardware/usage at all :p
And yes, for more complex work, or even for people who are slightly into tech, having Windows alongside Mac is great. I pretty much grew up using Windows, so it'll always hold a special place in my heart. The nostalgia for me is real. I remember getting super excited when I discovered that I could turn the taskbar color to silver from blue, in Windows XP, I was just a kid then, lmao :D
BONES wrote: Sun Jul 09, 2023 12:33 am You might change your mind when you see how much a well spec'd iPad Pro is. I priced one out to match the spec of my RoG Flow Z13 (it's a fancier Surface Pro) and it would have cost literally twice what I paid for my Z13. It's also not the full version of Logic, it is called "Logic for iPad" for a reason. But at least it has file compatibility with the macOS version, which makes it a much better bet than Cubase if you're a Mac person. (Cubase requires a conversion between Cubase and Cubasis [or whatever they call the iPad version].)
I actually did some research after this comment, and found some pretty great Windows machines for the same price as a MacBook Air, or an iPad that'd actually be worth having, and those Windows laptops just blow the Mac out of the water. Look at the Asus Zenbook S 13 OLED, holy smokes, that display, that processing power, and it just weights 1 KG. The 13th Gen i7 variant with 16 gigs of ram can easily take on the M2 Air. Don't even get me started on the gfx, and gaming :D

You can lament the cons of Mac software/hardware all you want, but at the end of the day - you still have to deal with the cesspool trainwreck that is Windows OS...

If it sounds too good to be true...
I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better? :(

For one moment I thought we were back on topic :-).

Nah, it made piracy easier. You no longer had to be friends with that creepy dude with the great record collection just so you could get a cassette copy of that record you wanted.

Cash me on GitHub! :P

DAW related, I'm patiently waiting for the CLAP-enabled version of Mul ab for Mac to be released. Over got all my CLAP plugins all lined up to test out. :hyper:

I'm curious to see if there is a palpable speed difference between CLAP and VST2. I don't know if anybody has done any formal testing. Maybe Urs did with Diva?

It doesn't sound too good to be true. Too good to be true would be if they sold that machine for $500. It's not new news that Apple is overpriced or charges premium prices for literally everything they make.

I looked at that specific computer. It includes a 10-core i7. Only, it doesn't say that it's 2 fast cores and 8 efficiency cores (12 threads). It's a chip made for mobile and as such, is designed to produce far less heat. The Iris Xe graphics is less than half as powerful as the new Apple M2. Everything else looked nice, though.

If you evenly spec stuff out, Apple's offerings have never been that much more than a Windows machine.

Hey - we weren’t all creepy - some of us just did the work to have best CD/tape/record collection. 😜

This is true of the laptops, not so much with the desktops. I'm a little disappointed that my choice of desert island DAW Digital Performer has issues with some plug ins on Windows, because it makes building a Windows desktop for DP a risky adventure. With Laptops I'm still not maxing out this M1 Air, it's only drawback is a measly 7 core graphics engine, and it still works just fine with pluggable and DispplayLink to drive a second 32" monitor.

But to relate this to the topic, my case with DP is the only reason to be talking about this at all in this thread, DP runs better right now (unless the configuration gods are on your side), on Mac. Logic is Mac only, and If you wanted to use Sonar or Samplitude PC would be your default. The rest of this is dick wagging.

The killer feature for me is automation clips. I can't tell how much I've always hated automation lanes that couldn't be divided out. It was a long-standing battle between me and Logic, having to copy over and align chunks of automation. Lanes are added as any other sub-track and then you create clips to automate the target track.
That sounds like exactly what I’ve always wanted - I’ll have to check it out - wish bitwig had this
