I just installed RapidComposer-5.0.0b15 and did a "Scan VST plugins" and it still blew up and unloaded RapidComposer. I think RapidComposer should spawn a new process when it scans the VST plugins and not use the main process. It doesn't leave any room to recover from a crash. If it's written in a way to spawn the process for each plugin it should add the plugin its about to scan before it spawns the process to the blacklist and when it comes back from the spawned process it deletes it because was successful. It would wait for a given time period to timeout if it takes too long. That's how Waves scans for VST's.

Post

Yes, you are right, scanning should be done in a separate process. I expected users would add the few virtual instruments they use, so this part of the program was not elaborated as other more important parts.
If it's written in a way to spawn the process for each plugin it should add the plugin its about to scan before it spawns the process to the blacklist and when it comes back from the spawned process it deletes it because was successful.
It should work exactly like that. The currently loaded plug-in path is stored in a text file, so if anything goes wrong, the plug-in will be blacklisted when RC starts next time and detects the existence of that file.

Thanks,
Attila

hi Attila

if its possible can you also add the ability too save/load a phrase with variations baked in/saved with the phrase?

Post

so, found this to be a problem, sort of..

first off, not sure why my install did this, but, it breaks r-tic (for now), for one, and it took me a while to find this path..

Image

Of course, it a Windows path.. which also leads me to another related issue.. In settings, there is an option create a new composition using "default", which you have to create a default comp however you want, etc. But, when you do create a default, the actual location to save all compositions, lol, by default, is the comp directory. Have to find the humor in that..

The only real issue is you have is to manually move or change the save location when creating the default comp. For a new user who doesn't know that, it would be very confusing. It would probably lead to a user creating the default comp and not getting it to work only because it doesn't exist in the correct directory.

Maybe reserve the word "default" for a comp name and act accordingly? If you need a song called default, then just deal with it in mix down.. lol but anyways..

Why did it choose a "users\public" and not my logged in account on windows?

And for everyone reading this, I did start work on a video about how to use the Rhythm Lab.. ;)

Post

I am sorry for this confusion, I totally forgot that R-Tic also looks up that path!
Data files are indeed installed into C:\Users\Public\Documents\RapidComposerV5.
The reason is that installation is simpler and less error-prone. Even previous versions installed data files into \Users\Public but RapidComposer moved them to your user Documents folder. This was fragile, and did not always work (think of Japanese users having their Documents folder on OneDrive, which totally messed up things). \Users\Public is a safe location whether you install it as an administrator or a simple user.

Would it make sense to ask the user to create a link to \Users\Public?

I'll fix r-tic in the coming weeks.. maybe take a different approach to user settings, etc.. like not hard coding the path.. lol

Not sure what you mean about asking the users to make a link..

I think really the biggest issue is just the saving of the default.comp file.. dunno what you want to do, with options several that come to mind, maybe just a popup since it is to be used as a "default"..

Post

Seems a new behavior has been introduced.. when you create or add a new track, the midi channel increments..

Great for multi instruments, but, not great for single vst..
maybe add a setting for this??

Hello Attila - congrats on the release of v5.. Great work.!

(Didn't want to make a new post until you've announced the launch here properly; so adding to this 'beta' thread in the meantime.)

I've been wanting to comment on the design/layout of this area of the UI (pic below) for some time and how it seemed 'unclear' or a little 'clumsy' on the eye. Of course I am so used to seeing it like this, its just become a niggle to me - no more.

However, looking from fresh eyes (as a newcomer would), it could seem as though the elements are all just floating there, placed any-old-how where there was some space (I am comparing to other DAW UI's for example - where mostly things seem nice and ordered and 'right'). Plus, there is that deal of 'dead-space/blank' area on the right of the UI here.

So, maybe now is a good time to have a fresh think about how these various elements of the UI are arranged here, during the course of v5's further progress..?
RC_v4_transport_top bar UI.png

Maybe other users here have some thoughts too..? Perhaps, no-one else is bothered in the slightest - and so, we move on.! Which is also perfectly fine of course... :tu:

Some food for thought:-
- Transport controls, metronome, together with the Measure/Bar number readout, be placed more centrally
- Structure Inspector moved over to the left
- Key, Tempo and Time Sig placed to the right of Transport Controls/Bar number readout
- Other options button (three dots) placed inline, to the right, away from Key, Tempo, Time Sig

Anyway, just some feedback for now..!

Bob

PS:- the User Guide is still opening as the June 2023 edition (from inside RC). Is there a newer 'v5' edition I am missing somewhere.? Just tried, seems the same from the website...

Have not found time to play with it. :(

Does it also include Melodya?
Had purchased Melodya 12-2020.
