I've tried to install Bitwig on Linux Mint with a bunch of Windows Vst (Serum, Arturia, etc.) through Yabridge. Audio was handled by Jack, a RT kernel.
As result, it run slower than in Windows. I mean I have to set Vst not sandboxed on Bitwig to have 512 samples and 441000 hz without audio glitch (128 and 48000 hz on Windows).

As test, I tried on the same PC where I set a Hackintosh. There I can reach easily 128 samples (48000Hz) with sandboxed VST.

Ok, 512 samples (41000Hz) and not sandboxed VST is not the end of the world. But what will happen when I will have to update my distro? I will have to reinstall "all" and also all the personalization (and luck to not delete things), in hope that all the librairies will be not broken or deprecated by some developpers (that already happen to me).

I have less chance to loose all my settings in Windows (also Hackintosh) with better audio settings than on a linux distribution. I made my choice.

Edit:
I forgot to mention that my PC is a kind of NUC, an Intel I5 9400 + 16 Go of Ram, SSD.

Hi, for future reference, you can save and re-use your entire .wine folder. I use wine-staging, and only update it when known working versions are separate and safe. In conjunction with that,
nobody forces you to upgrade your distribution, and once it is working well, you can just leave it alone, and make music. It's easy to have a second distro on which to upgrade as desired.

Mint is not a dedicated audio distro. AVLinux is, and it comes preconfigured with wine, and a connected jack-pulse setup that is excellent. Mint is great at it's main purpose, a general purpose modern OS.

I suspect Bitwig with your (excellent) plugins, is more i-7 i-9 territory, so I would try the Reaper demo to see if it has improved performance.

Hardly any linux musicians have reported using Arturia or Serum. All the U-he products have native linux versions and demos. Hive, ACE, Zebra2, Repro 1 and 5, TyrellN6, TripleCheese, ZebraCM, BazilleCM (and BeatZille) ColorCopy, and Twangstrom all work fine here. The Diva Demo works fine, and SynthMaster One and SynthMaster II work fine via yabridge, among many others.
Hang in there, the future could drag on for years, if we're lucky :hyper:
Cheers

Anyone know if there’s anything similar to the ipad AUM app, on Linux?

Album 13 at BandCamp, 'Marrige Vow'

Twenty songs, runs a bit over 3 hours, all made with linux setups, and the amazing sounds, instruments, effects and tools we have at our fingertips. Song 4, Firelight, is also on album 8, 'Along The River Trail'. Teachers pet?

When I asked my friend at church, to introduce me to her gorgeous girlfriend,
I had no idea that four decades later, we'd still be :hyper:
Nobody told her it would be easy...but she said "Yes!"

I also use Linux Mint, but the LMde 6 edition based on Debian. Bitwig works fine out of the box with Pipewire, and in Reaper I have to make some adjustments.
But the thing with Linux is, there is so much help out there on the Internet. It just needs some research and some learning curve. Once that is done, you can have a rock solid OS.

I still have a windows 10 system on one of my other pc. But since I use mostly Reaper, Studio 1 and Bitwig, and can even exchange Daw Proiects now, I try to avoid Windows as much as I can. I hate their nanny style, same applies to Apple. I used a hackintosh for a few years, but hell I ditched it. Linux is kind of freedom, but freedom does cost time learning. Such is life.

Linux is amazing - it's not hard to use and not hard to understand. Perhaps that was the case in the past but not anymore.

Xruns...? That's not specific to Linux is it, don't all OSes potentially face buffer over- or underruns and audio dropouts...?

I dropped Windows completely some years ago and just use Linux for music and everything else. I don't even use Windows VSTs via Yabridge or anything because the Linux native options are fantastic.

With Ardour 8, Renoise and the many LV2 / VST plugs I have installed, I'm all set. I have a Reaper licence to v6 (used it since v2) but I prefer Ardour these days. I also keep trying to find an excuse to splash out on Bitwig but honestly it'd just be a waste of money.

So aye, Linux is great and if an idiot like me can get great mileage out of it then so can anyone.

There are better signatures out there.

I've a new album at BandCamp, 'Skyward', 20 instrumental electronic/acoustic songs running around 4 hours. I'd say some of these are my favorites, but that might disrupt the peaceful vibe among the other albums ;-)

I installed reaper 7.01 in the newest linux mint lmde. But pipewire did not show up in the drop doen menu. It did though in Bitwig. It took me a while to figure out that i had to write the first letter of my audio out, so repaer recognized it. Not what I expect from a drop down menu.

Pipewire supports the following types: ALSA, JACK, PulseAudio, and Pipewire.

Reaper uses JACK or ALSA as its low latency technologies. Pipewire won’t come up as an option.
C/R, dongles & other intrusive copy protection equals less-control & more-hassle for consumers. Company gone-can’t authorize. Limit to # of auths. Instability-ie PACE. Forced internet auths. THE HONEST ARE HASSLED, NOT THE PIRATES.

Hi, could you share exactly what you changed and typed to help Reaper, minus anything personal? I'm sure many would benefit.

This is a low-cost effect chain that has great sound. Using the CamelCrusher presets, randomizer, filter, and compressor, makes a wide range of tones possible. The Bluecat plugin offers 3rds, fourths, and fifths, in addition to octave alternatives, and really nice bread & butter chorus options.
Replika and Solaris add huge ambience potential. $115 if you buy Reaper and Replika. I have some great Amp-$im products, but this is one example among many, of very inexpensive ways to enjoy playing and practicing, and produce enjoyable music.

New instrumental album at BandCamp tonight, "The Battle For Queen Anne's Lace"

Fifteen songs running about 4 hours, made in linux with Reaper in AVLinux.

This album is about battles, their warriors and workers, seen and unseen, epic and miniscule.

(Songs 10, 11, and 12 are more lighthearted than the others)

These are also available as singles at Spotify, and the other sites served by Distrokid

Hope you find some you like!

His new album/collection is very compelling ambient instrumental music,
made in linux, using Eurorack and Bitwig. Very well done, and when
played in order, has a nice build taking place. Great sounds and blends throughout.

New album at BandCamp, caught a few escapees, and rounded up some stragglers.
Some fast, some slow, and some not...
15 songs running a bit over four hours if you stay awake
No fruit was damaged, and no windows were broken in the creation of these songs.
