DoktorTenma wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 2:21 pm For some reason the 2.0.5 update seem to have solved the erratic CPU spikes that I have had using Avenger on my MacBook Pro M1 Max 32GB system. At least I can no longer recreate these in Logic, Cubase or Bitwig.

So for people who have these erratic CPU spikes, see if 2.0.5 fixes these for you.
Yeahhh Boooy... same here... a lot Better!! I dont have these bad spikes with just the Init Preset anymore!! sometimes a minimal one... but no more these bad drop-outs in Ableton! before this update i couldnt use 3 instances without drop-outs... now i have 26 on 256samples.. with minimal spikes.... but no drop-outs! I was just about to write Rene an eMail today... and saw your Post DoktorTenma.. :)

Good Job Rene and the whole V-Team. Manuel and his Team was always great... never disapointed me since 2013! Best wishes... :D :D
Confirmed, version 2.0.5 does NOT spike here anymore.

That being said, now that I can finally judge the actual CPU consumption better, I can see that having the GUI open pushes both, the WindowServer, as well as the AUHostingService processes to over 40% CPU each.

That being said, I don't care for continuation of the discussion here.

All great news - slightly surprising as the spiking isn't mentioned in the 2.0.5 release notes but hooray.

Thanks to Rene and the four who contacted him.

Could we please have access to all updates?
I prefer 2.03 over 2.05. Faster loading of presets!
Luckily I haven't deleted installers of 2.03

Post

if i upgrade now to V2 will i be able to continue to use V1 until i saved and exported all my presets/stems? if not, will i be able to revert to v.186 if something is different when i notice? (even with Tone2 synths i found some presets which sounded different even when someone states 100% backwardscompatibility, nah it wasnt the case mostly ;)).

this should be always possible, cause i had this with other plugins where some versions introduced differences. e.g. Serum i got some different installers and you got an archive on Xfer and some presets i had to load with an older version cause something in the code was changed and Steve also said to export from an old version the STEMS.

Ok, 2.0.5 fixing the spikes and reducing overall CPU load is confirmed. I have a benchmark project classifying a few synths in view of CPU usage and Avenger just climbed quite a few ranks.
Very well done VENGEANCE!

All in all, I must say that I am pretty impressed by this V2... I was the first to complain about the upgrade price but the quality provided is really mindblowing...

So now Avenger 2 is ex-aequo with Phase Plant as my favorite synth :-)...

Both of them remind me a sentence of one of my colleagues about McKinsey and BCG, 2 top (expansive) consulting firms:
"McKinsey makes you believe you are very smart and you need them because they are the only ones as smart as you. BCG makes you believe you are stupid and you need them because they are the only ones smart."

Phase Plant and Avenger are the same, Phase Plant is very much McKinsey, I operate it easily, I do exactly what I want, I feel a strong sound designer when I use it... Avenger is BCG, even if the UI is better in v2, it is still difficult to operate, very rich and complex, with a ton of powerful options, the presets are so excellent that I feel like a noob in sound design (compared to Manuel, I think I am not the only one though).
Even if the process is less pleasant with Avenger, I must admit that the quality of the sounds I can produce, thanks to all the effects, filters, wave shapers and associated presets for almost everything in the synth is excellent.

At the end (and it is only my opinion), Avenger and PP are 2 synths with many differences in philosophy but the common point to be at the top of the VST game in EOY 2023... Current, Diva, Hive, Serum, Pigments, Falcon are awesome also but below in terms of power in my view. The 5 firsts because of routing limitations, Falcon because of UI+oscillators/waveshapers limitations.

Avenger v.2.0.5 (Dec 8th, 2023 build) has negligible CPU usage on a Mac Studio M1 Max running macOS Sonoma v.14.1.1. It has definitely been optimized over Avenger 1, significantly. What a synth of beauty! I held off on getting it until I had time and until the servers could recover from the onslaught. I'm glad I did. This is how a powerhouse synth should be, 100%.

I rather enjoy the workflow and find it incredibly intuitive. While it is powerful with a myriad of options, I do not feel overwhelmed or lost in the matrix with it, which is a very well-designed instrument. Complexity is easy; simple is difficult.

That sounds really great, congrats to the Devs! It would be cool to hear what caused all those nasty spikes.
Its over for Bitwig--CUBASE WON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I purchased Avenger 2 upgrade today and installed it on my older Windows laptop (which previously ran Avenger 1) and I found that the new GUI consumes much more CPU and GPU resources comparing to version 1.8.6. Can we expect further GUI optimizations soon? I don't want Avenger 2 to kill my motherboard ;) The video below shows performance details:

Just upgraded to version 2, apart from Avenger always forgetting where the factory library and my own expansions have been installed this is a great update, feature-wise and CPU-wise. When Avenger claims that the factory library has not been installed there seems to be no way to abort the process (yes, I've tried everything already) so the only way to solve it is to re-install over and over again, but the next time you open it, same procedure... I'll look for some preferences somewhere which can be trashed to solve the problem.

Well, I hadn't tried a complete computer restart which fixed the issue, everything running fine now on my 2019 Macbook Pro (2019), will try installing on the big studio Mac next.

Yay - now get to making some new expansions! Would love a world music-ish one, using instruments as starting points for sound designy stuff.

With version 2.05 I'm still getting constant freezes of the graphics of Avenger whenever I tweak any control. It's like a 0.5s complete freeze of the UI. The weird thing is, the freeze only happens upon releasing the mouse button. Graphics are fine while I keep the mouse button pressed down but as soon as I release it, there is a complete freeze of the graphics and a tiny 'click' sound in audio.

Mac M1 Mini, Big Sur, Reaper latest version.. using VST3 version of Avenger.

It's not completely breaking the plugin but it makes it super annoying to work with.
