I feel your pain!
And this is what OSC is all about

I wasn’t specifically calling you out on it, not at all. It’s just that these sorts of discussions about the rules come up so frequently that I think people in general, including those just lurking, can get distracted by them and feel that there’s more of an emphasis on the contest than I believe there should be. So my point was directed more at them. Yes there’s an element of contest, but if we endlessly debate the rules then we lose focus on the real point, imo.PeterBPL wrote: Sat Jan 27, 2024 5:59 pmI never said that "C in OSC stands for Contest", I just said that OSC is a contest, because it is (there are winners etc). But it's also a challenge - how to made something using not always the best tool. And I like that concept.Double Tap wrote: Sat Jan 27, 2024 5:53 pm Minor nitpick, but the C in OSC stands for Challenge not Contest. (...)
What about the situation where the synth itself has per-instrument/patch effects built in?silverpants wrote: Sat Jan 27, 2024 7:31 am I also like the idea of having a special "no FX" round (perhaps just a limiter as suggested). In the same manor as some rounds are "gloves off - turn to 11" style.
I think restrictions can push creative thinking.
To be clear - the OSC main rules work well because it's still going strong! So don't mess the constitution. But a rare "no FX" round would be fun.
Also - a really crap/lofi synth sometime would be fun. I enjoyed ADL Plug![]()
Well it would be up to the organisers. If they wanted a really dry month - then choose a synth without onboard FX.folderol wrote: Sat Jan 27, 2024 7:57 pmWhat about the situation where the synth itself has per-instrument effects built in?silverpants wrote: Sat Jan 27, 2024 7:31 am I also like the idea of having a special "no FX" round (perhaps just a limiter as suggested). Not trying to be 'difficult' but I have a particular situation in mind.silverpants wrote: Sat Jan 27, 2024 7:59 pmWell it would be up to the organisers. I'm one who has stayed, since 2015 anyway (there were a whole 80 OSCs before I jumped onboard!). For me - experiencing a new synth together - YES. Give each other feedback - YES! Also - enjoy the learning that comes from creative limitsempphryio wrote: Sat Jan 27, 2024 9:45 pm For the people who stay, it's primarily just a chance for people to experience a new synth together and give each other feedback. Making it a contest gives a little extra motivation. People do ultimately want to make music that sounds good, so if you make too many rule restrictions people will find something else to do. Dry is going way overboard IMO.
