That the soubdcloud OSC playlist only has 7 likes suggests few people are using it. It really makes listening convenient. If you only listen one single time I guess not. Otherwise: Listen to One Synth Challenge #179: Any One Synth, a playlist by One Synth Challenge on #SoundCloud

i'm a huge fan of Linux and was wondering which distro do you use?
I use MX Linux (based on Debian) as well as the KXStudio repositories for some plugins. One of my favorite synths on Linux is Yoshimi (many thanks to @folderol). By the way, I think I heard a drum kit in folderol's entry (viewtopic.php?p=8837385#p8837385) that I designed for Yoshimi about 12 years ago :)

Would that be Natural Drum Kit? It has a version date of 2012-06-16
It's one I use a lot, so very many thanks if that was you.

i use it a lot but it usually sits in my recently played tab for the period, so i find it quickly that way. though i guess more likes would make it somewhat more likely that people might find their way here eventually?

anyways, preliminary round of voting done, now for a closer second listen...

Post

speaking about playlist,
I may be wrong but the official playlist is being created after submission window is closed. Am I right? If no, then how to find it?
From time to time some other person creates the playlist but then in the middle of OSC stops updating it :(

I would not lie ;) that it would be comfortable to have this playlist available from osc edition beginning till the end

BTW I mentioned it in other place but voting using drag-and-drop is very unfortunate way. Especially with 60 songs the distance to drag is enormously inconvenient.

Post

I voted. I applaud everyone for trying! Zio Mau and Cdbasku always make bangers! Overtone Pendulum is the one track that stood out to me the most, and it reminds me very much of 70s modular and computer music. The SH-101 (Lush 2) and wawadrum (Operator) tracks were really nice to listen to as well.

Post

Wow! As usual, the quality of the tracks if high. I've listened to some of the tracks and the judging will be difficult as so many tracks sound like 5s.

Well I've made an initial voting list, but will probably shuffle things about a bit. I had intended to post some comments, but that was before I saw just how many entries there are :help:
One thing that struck me was the number of entries that are very skillfully put together, but just don't seem to have much melodic content. Maybe that's what's wanted these days, and being an 'elderly' I've somewhat missed the train

It's been awhile since I've submitted a track but I noticed that this month also hardware
was allowed so I thought it would be a fun idea to use my Korg O5R/W module which I problably
haven't use for more than 15 years. Well the idea was fun but the excecution a bit problematic
in some instances. If your using plugins you can automate anything but in this instance all of the changes had to be made in midiclips(volume, panning, delay & reverb level). Luckily this module has good reverbs and delays so soundwise I think it worked and found some presets that would work for the idea I had in mind.

I recorded 14 miditracks to audio in Ableton 11 and used a compressor and limiter on the master.
In this stage I also used a bit of reverb from the DAW,

Hope you like it,

Hi. I understand that the 05 is sample-based synthesis (like a Kawai K1, Roland D-50, or similar), but can you confirm if you used any of the 160+ drum samples in your track?
According to the manual the sounds of this module are based on what they call multisounds
which are multisampled PCM waveforms. After the wave form sound is created through a digital filter and amp. If this method of synthesis is not allowed as per OSC rukes then I have to withdraw my subsmission?

Well I noticed in my case, it took me such a long time to get all the sounds the way I wanted that the composition and melody came second, as I had both run out of time and CPU power. Also there was a risk whenever I changed something to get hooked on a new idea and completely scrap what I had, so at some point I just committed to one idea.

So it might be the case that a lot of effort goes into the technical aspect and by then you’re tired of the whole thing or out of time

I gave a bunch of tracks 3s because they sounded professional, but there was nothing about the melodies or chord progressions that made them stand out. I gave others 4s if they were more melodic but not exceptionally creative.

Well yes and no!!! Having just celebrated my 74th birthday, I would class as 'elderly', but I still like to create tracks with a melody and solos. My current track is just me trying something different. :phones:

Usually jazz/blues based ... with a bit of pop, MOR and easy listening thrown in. :D

For OSC, especially this round where you can use any synth, this type of D-50-style synthesis is fine I think, so long as the PCM component of a sound is a single-(or very short multi)-cycle waveform. Where I have a bit of a problem is that your drums go well beyond that, they are full drum samples rather than short single/multi-cycle waveform that are then synthesized into drums - if you know what I mean? It seems like an unfair advantange over people that had to create their drums from scratch.

That said, don't withdraw - I can easily believe that you used them in good faith, especially given the unusual 'any synth' rule this month.

Now we're at 8 likes so I'm totally not wasting my time!
