Budget dawless multichannel recording setup

So, I want to play my machines/instruments and record at the same time, not tied up to a Computer and not selling my butt to reach that goal.
8 channel recording would be ok for minimal setup with plenty of flash memory room for sessions.
The cheapest option I found is Zoom LiveTrak L-8.
Is there a cheaper solution or maybe I can just buy a mixer and set my mind to do best with hardware setup I got?
How do you do in that situation?

Zoom R series are actually cheaper than the more mixer-y L series, possibly better for editing?
Google portastudio, you'll find various options from the usual suspects; Zoom, Tascam, Fostex...
Nothing I can comment on from experience, Im afraid, I do (sort of) 'DAWless' , but not 'computerless'.

Even better: https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=portastudio
Slightly higher than the Zoom you mentioned, but maybe 1010 Bluebox is worth a look? It has the benefit that it is super small, but the downside is... that it's super small—the inputs are really close together.

Or Tascam Model 12?

Not a mixer nor multitrack recording, but the Roland SP-404 MkII Sampler might be an option if you want to record and playback multiple times with various effects options. Maximum sample time is something like 16 minutes, but that might be mono only.

Tascam Model12 comes to mind. It's the cheapest of their Model series mixers though for sure costs more than the Zoom, but it gives you both a proper mixer and recorder. 12 track recording to USB, and they have a 16 version as well. Some specs not as good as the Zoom though - only records up to 24/48 rather than 24/96. Personally that wouldn't bother me, as 48kHz is what I work at anyway, likely same for lots of people? I used to use Tascam mixers way back and they were decent gear. Dunno about nowadays? There are some other mixer/recorders but you have to check the fine details...mostly they only record to a 2-bus out. That might be OK for you though? I'm reasonably sure Soundcraft and A&H sell USB mixers...

The only thing missing in Model 12 is automation of your tracks. You have to move faders in realtime for the final mix.
- unless they fixed this with a firmware update since I looked 3-4 years ago
Tascam DP series portastudios though, have automation also.
I find portastudios great in the sense, not much you can do but record. So you get a lot of recording done.
It took years in DAW to not be distracted by everything you can do in picking sounds and stuff, tons of effect plugins to use etc.

Use an old iPad with an appropriate USB-C interface (plus adapter if needed) and then use the AUM app as a mixer/recorder only. No need to use any plugin effects unless you want to.
