Rodents Of Odin

Frightened, the enemy knows what is coming,

Alerted by synchronised, rhythmical drumming,

Below the horizon for now out of sight,

They're perfectly timed to attack in the night.

Twenty ships strong, an unstoppable force,

Plotting revenge as they're plotting their course,

Commanded to search every villagers house,

To put to the sword every mole, shrew and mouse.

Two hundred hamsters and mice and chinchillas,

All battle hardened and highly trained killers,

Lusting for blood and approaching the shore,

The rodents of Odin are ready for war.

The terrified townsfolk make haste for the fields,

Leaving their weapons and dropping their shields,

These Rodents of Odin won't take them alive,

It's all they can they do if they hope to survive.

But as it turns out since their journey begun,

This army had drunk just a bit too much rum,

The battle had no chance to go as they'd planned,

Most of the soldiers collapsed on the sand.

Two hundred hamsters and mice and chinchillas,

All battle hardened and highly trained killers,

Lusting for blood and approaching the shore,

The rodents of Odin are too drunk for war.

Two hundred hamsters and mice and chinchillas,

All battle hardened and highly trained killers,

Lusting for blood, throwing up on the shore,

The rodents of Odin are too pissed for war.

Two hundred hamsters, mice and chinchillas.

All battle hardened and highly trained killers.

But the future was written, a mission ill fated,

Can't conquer and vanquish while inebriated.
Edit: Archive.org has been down for a while so I uploaded the song to https://whyp.it/

I've never used it before so if anyone has problems with the link, please let me know.

"Rodents of Odin" - a new Genetic_Junk song:

What immediately strikes me is the great vocal melody - I'm amazed, it's
really well done. I think the guitars and the structure of the song are
excellent. The individual parts alternate quickly and it's all very
entertaining. The drums are used in a minimalistic way and to the point.

The vocals are very dynamic, dialogue-like - really great. But mmh,
less effects would be better here. I understand that it's supposed to
sound a little weird, after all, it's about Odin's rodents (!), but according to
my taste you really overdid it with the multi-delay. As a listener, I have
to get used to that first.

Overall: I'm impressed - great! :tu:

 Very clever! Love all the little automations/edits etc. All hangs together nicely in a psychedelic kind of way.

Only thing I can suggest is that the heavily distorted guitar riff parts deem to get a bit lost occasionally, so maybe just a touch more high mids on them (perhaps just at the sides with a mid side eq?), so they cut through?

Thanks enroe. Yeah the delay can be a bit jarring at first. But you're right it is intentional. I'm going to lower the delay level a little bit in some spots and upload a new mix.

Thanks! I probably spend more time tinkering with those automations than actually recording. But I do enjoy the pitch shifting that comes from changing the delay times. The distorted guitars had lots of energy in the lower end of the spectrum. I changed the heavy guitar sound and uploaded a new mix. Put an overdrive into a clean channel instead of just driving the amp gain of the lead channel. Sounds more punk than metal, I think.

It's the Alt mix in the first post.

Thanks redmagott!

Alternative version 2.0.8: Much better. The vocals sound more understandable
and more pleasant. The craziness is still there. You can also hear the guitars
better, which supports the song even more and makes it a bit groovier.

You're welcome.

This version (208) also includes the intro, which was absent from the previous (205) mix.
It's only fleeting but I think it makes a considerable difference.
The craziness is still there.
Agreed.
A song about Viking hamsters is bound to be a little crazy.

cool sounds with a lot of automations! one thing i would to suggest: sometimes like a 0:29 the voice is still under e.g. a guitar sound. for my ears the voice should always have the main focus. did you try some sidechaining?
i mean when the the vocal comes in the whole mix (without voice of course) could be ducked by some db - that could make (maybe...) the voice even more clearer to hear.
it is better to have a track with some mistakes than a track without any soul

Wow, this hit way harder than anticipated; Great work! I love the mash up of styles. I'd love to hear more about what inspired this/the creative process. Bring on the heavy riffs :phones:

Very cool—a crescendo of darkness.
When the data is corrupt in the Desert of the Real, Beyond the Last Thought, where intuition reigns, is the solace that will embolden and strengthen the soul, giving hope once more to this age of failing technique. eassae.com

Thanks for listening and commenting. True about ducking. Since the guitar and vocals occupy similar frequency ranges. Maybe ducking the guitar would be sufficient.
