In the briefest of summaries of past years:MrJubbly wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 7:19 pmCare to briefly summarize those stated changes in popularity?audiojunkie wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 5:45 pm I've been doing this once yearly for several years now, and it has been interesting to see the changes in popularity of the various operating systems on which music is produced.
Linux usage has increased, but still runs in third place for desktop OSes. Android usage has increased a bit as well. Everything else has remained pretty much the same. So far, this year is shaping up to remain on the same track as previous years.

And yet I am running six different Windows 11 computers in my house, four of which I built myself exactly how I wanted and have none of those issuesBBFG# wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 8:31 pm That's an illusion.
Freedom from thought is not freedom.
Right now I'm dealing with Windows deciding and turning off cores and the ability to turn them back on. It's also snuck in a bunch of junk programs and AI "assistant" that I don't want or need and I'm now researching how to remove them like I was able to do before for unnecessary Internet interference.
If you want to disable Copilot AKA the AI assistant that is super easy
Settings> Personalization > Taskbar, you can turn off Copilot. However, if that's not enough and you wan to disable it completely, you will need to do this in registry.
To do so, launch Registry Editor, then go to
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
On the left, right click on the Windows folder, go to New > Key, name it "WindowsCopilot"
Then select WindowsCopilot, on the right, right click and create a DWORD value, name it "TurnOffWindowsCopilot" and set its value at 1.
Restart the computer to have the change take effect.
Since computers seem to be a mystery to you, you should probably avoid editing the registry, and should probably avoid Linux all together
That's the freedom you get with Windows and it's not an illusion

I have no problem editing registry. And I want to do more than deactivate it, I want to remove it and keep it removed. As I've done with other useless apps from them which they eventually sneak back on with certain updates. I've even turned off updates many times and they find ways to turn it back on. The only mystery to me is why they insist that everybody needs to have everything they demand everyone to have. Most of it's junk for the mindless and indoctrinated anyway. I've always stripped every version of Windows down to what I need from it and get peak performance from the machine I have at the time. And have been doing that since 1993. It's only these last updates that have become an issue to force the decision to be free of them.IvyBirds wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 10:33 pmAnd yet I am running six different Windows 11 computers in my house, four of which I built myself exactly how I wanted and have none of those issuesBBFG# wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 8:31 pm That's an illusion.

Sorry, despite my best efforts, I wasn’t clear. I was referring to computerless production setups—any system that runs a DAW that isn’t using a standard OS—a DAW integrated into a piece of hardware like N.I. Maschine, or AKAI has with their MPC system, or the Deluge. In all actuality, these “hardware” systems are probably running a form of Linux, but that is beside the point.muki wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 10:34 pm hardware ?

I obviously like this place, but I would never think of KVR as some bastion of OS equanimity. It's always leaned heavily Windows, not really a problem, but I wouldn't read much into Windows numbers on this site. It's not very moderated and people get into massive flame wars about OS here all the time. Most mac based DAW users I know IRL do not frequent KVR.
It's a bit like looking for Bitwig, FL Studio and Live market share numbers off of a film composer heavy site like VI-Control.
