I actually went back to the previous polls to take lessons learned and improve the poll for this year. It was your suggestion that I post to the most active forum for better responses. So, thank you Vurt!

For those confused by the “Hardware” option, I’ve renamed that option a little bit to clarify things better. An example of computerless hardware for music production could be an Akai MPC. I hope that option is more clear now for everyone.

ah! i see!audiojunkie wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 11:58 pm I was referring to computerless production setups—any system that runs a DAW that isn’t using a standard OS—a DAW integrated into a piece of hardware like N.I. Maschine, or AKAI has with their MPC system,....
thanks for the clarification !
happy new year!

Android 3%? Really? I thought it was higher than this cuz of many people using Koala Sampler.

Not possible. Sooner or later support for win10 will be withdrawn and you will be forced to upgrade or run a system that is incompatible with "modern" software. It happened to me with Win XP and Win 8.1. I reluctantly upgraded to Win 11 last year.MirkoVanHauten wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 7:37 pm Win10. Switched from MacOS. That's more likely to be much later, rather than sooner, in my opinion. I was actually able to continue using Windows 7 for music production, right up until very recently. As recently as Summer 2023 in fact, when my previous device finally packed up and died. And that was also same time period where certain newly updated plugins first started exhibiting non-compatibility with W7.thecontrolcentre wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2025 8:16 pmNot possible. Even though many developers had long since dropped support for W7, most of their new updates continued to work perfectly fine on that discontinued OS.
Which probably bodes pretty well for W10 users also, who may wish to stay using that OS, LONG past its official end of support date ~ so long as they are content to use those devices "offline", without any up-to-date security updates Which, should not really be much of a problem, so long as they continue to use only legit software. Albeit, I tend to avoid using software which requires regular "online" connections (other than for the initial activation). It might be a different situation for software from developers who I have avoided.
The reason I stayed on W7 for so long was my personal distaste for W10 (I just never gelled with it). So when I bought a new device and OS, to replace my previous music PC, I opted for W11 instead. Personally, I prefer it to W10, although I do also share many other users' distaste for Microsoft's tendencies for adding unwanted bloat and forced updates, etc. by default.
If Linux were as compatible and accessible as Windows is for music software, I'd certainly give it a shot. However, it really isn't as user-friendly or as well-supported, from past experience, when I previously tested various versions of Linux.
As for macOS, I don't like Apple's overall business philosophy and proprietary model. Not to mention their disregard for maintaining backwards compatibility, which is something very important to me.

Windows XP's lifespan was 17 years, 7 months, and 16 days: Start date: December 31, 2001, end of extended support: April 8, 2014thecontrolcentre wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2025 8:16 pmNot possible. For 8.1 that came out on August 27, 2013 and the last update was on January 10, 2023 almost ten years later
Anyone with a licensed copy of Windows 8 or 8.1 was given a free update to Windows 10 in 2015. Windows 10 is still actively getting updated with the most recent one just a few weeks ago, and the current release candidate available as a public beta for the next one
Windows 11 was also available as a free upgrade to all licensed users of Windows 10 as long as your hardware supports it
The reality is Windows is amazingly supported by Microsoft and has a really long history of fantastic support, and 64 bit software that ran on Windows 7 probably still runs on Windows 11 just fine, over fifteen years later
Computer hardware itself has also been historically dramatically improved when a new version of Windows gets released compared with a previous version. That includes faster CPUs with more cores, more and faster RAM, and larger and faster HD
so it's probably time for an upgrade anyway when a new version of Windows comes out.
Of course your old computer as obsolete as it may be will still continue to run
My Windows 98, XP, 7, and 10 machines that I built are all going strong and I play games on them often, my old audio and video production software is on them as well

My i7 windows 10 desktop is coming up to eight years now and is still more than capable with almost anything I throw at it. It's also been pretty much rock solid for all my audio needs.
If it does ever give up the ghost I'm hoping I can just switch the nvme drives to a new box and carry on.
However I do have Win 11 on my laptop and it's been completely fine for Bitwig, Ableton and Wavelab, so not really any major concerns if I was forced on that path.

I voted Mac but I am trying to set something up on Linux. My biggest issue is my DAW is Ableton Live, which I'm not really ready to change, and I don't feel like dealing with it in WINE. I have Bitwig 8 track or something like that running. I even have Yabridge going for windows plugins. It will probably remain Mac for the foreseeable future.

Who gives a f**k what producers use! Their setup is so predictable and boring!HTT wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2025 6:41 pm The real question/poll is what do VST/AU/DAW producers actually record/sell? KVR is not the real world.
Most of us here are enjoying the freedom of everything musical. Who cares about the “real world”! It’s so bad outside that it’s wise to ignore it and listen to yourself or to those on the same boat.
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

The real question/poll would be: what can I use to sound like someone famous and make lots of money with zero talent and minimal effort?
