im happy about xfer, they feel like a plugin company driven by heart, and not primarily by financial reasons. thats why i have no impatience here at all. :)
You make a really good point, and I agree about Xfer Records being a company that’s driven by passion and excellence, and not always by money or greed. Personally, I’m interested in a lot of different features and capabilities in VST synths that are priced around $200. I’m also used to deep and complicated workflows since my focus is on sound design.

But complexity with high-quality sound and ease of use has become much more popular over the years, and less niche. Although wavetable synthesis wasn’t new when Serum initially came out, Steve put a major focus on usability and incredible sounding oscillators, all with an easy to use GUI.

Back when my nephew was still a teenager, he took a massive interest in Dubstep and other sub-genres of bass music. After I got him set up with a laptop, software, and a MIDI controller, he chose Serum as his main plug-in to begin the learning process.

That ended up being a critical decision for him, and I’m thankful that he chose the synth that was being used in all of his favorite music. With zero music-making experience, he was able to figure out how to use Serum fairly quickly. And he’s had a great time experimenting and creating tracks that he shares with family and friends.

That ease of use has always been one of Serum’s biggest selling points, so I seriously doubt that Steve would design a successor that would deviate very far from that ethos. I do expect version 2 to have some cool surprises up its sleeve now that our computers are so powerful.

As an example, I’d love to see a full-featured additive synthesis engine in the vein of NI’s Razor that you could use as a layer with your patches, along with more refined effects to choose from. I also expect presets to be backwards compatible, since there’s so many of them out there already. It will be interesting to see how that’s implemented.

I’m just as excited as everyone else to finally load up Serum 2 in my DAW. After all, it feels good to support a developer that “gets it” and who wants to release their best software to all of the loyal users around the world. I’m sure that the looooong wait will be totally worth it!! :tu:

What do you think about pricing of Serum 2? Will it stay the same? Thinking of getting it now cause it'll be free to current customers (at least that's what has already always been promised).

I heard somewhere (I don't remember exactly from whom) but they said that the update will be absolutely free for those who bought Serum 1🙏🥳🔥

IIRC something went wrong with the team that was helping Steve with Nerve and the project was abandoned.

Saw something like that too. Although I remember it as the cooperation/team was abandoned and not the entire project ..

I think if you buy it now you should be buying it because you want serum not just because it gets you v2. I say this because if something were to happen to Steve and serum 2 never arrived would you feel cheated in some way?

My understanding from Steve was that he told people about serum 2 as they asked what he was working on but he does not particularly advertise the free updates as then there is expectation of updates and a v2. He did state he plans to give v2 to serum owners free but I got the impression he did not want people to buy serum just because of this in case it does not happen (it was a while ago when he said this and serum 2 still had a way to go as this was back in 2021)

+ Serum is an absolute beast in it´s current state and probably the most used synth in existence with the most 3rd party preset banks ever available for a VST...
It´s well worth buying it even without any V2 appearing and if money is tight don´t forget the rent-to-own option via Splice... worked well for me!

Yes definitely. For me serum is still used the most of the many powerful soft synths I own.

You know, I do not think I care if he charges us or not. I've used Serum so much that I will gladly pay any reasonable upgrade price he wants to charge (and with Steve, I'm sure it would be a fair, modest price.) I've use Serum especially for wind-driver leads, and for those sounds in particular, it is the easiest programming synth I've got. Whatever and whenever it happens is cool for me.
