Created on an iPad Pro with a few cheap apps, an Apple Pencil, and some decent headphones.

They look just like us. They are watching.

This is one of my favorite songs I heard on KVR Audio and the recording fidelity is real good but it’s not “bright” enough of a mix. What apps/daw did you use? I’m on my iPad Pro that I have prepared to make music with that has lots of apps but I only made a tiny bit so far.

Thank you very much! Comments like yours are very encouraging and motivate me to make more. Regarding my setup, I use Cubasis as my DAW. This soundtrack used many different synths and effects. My “workflow” is a bit unconventional. I typically route synths into Cubasis with AUM. The downside to that is that I lose track of which one I used. The track title becomes Kymatica. I should keep better notes using the Notepad feature, but I get caught up in the process and forget.

I do remember that I used Mitosynth to create several 8 and 16 measure phrases until I had about 3 and a half minutes of material that I arranged on the timeline. Then I just started adding additional tracks to go with them. I ended up with about 50 tracks in Cubasis. Then I started deleting and revising tracks that made it sound cluttered. The finished piece has about 35 tracks. The project window looks like a descending staircase from left to right.

Next, I Freeze all midi tracks and render them to audio. This really makes the final mix go quickly. I only apply effects to the audio tracks. That allows me to change them if they don’t sound good to me. I don’t use many effects besides Stereo EQ, Channel Strip, Reverb, and Delay. I do use one called Other Desert Cities. Its default delay is really good.

For synths I recall that I also used Sunrizer, Nambu, King of Digital, and a few others. I probably have close to a hundred synth apps. I stopped buying them about a year ago. They all do pretty much the same thing. I can get just about anything I want from my current collection.

I don’t use any external keyboards or MIDI controllers. Ironic since I played piano and bass in bands for most of my life! I use several different MIDI generators such as Piano Motifs and Fugue Machine. They are pretty flexible and give me a lot of control of the output. At least enough where I don’t feel like I’m cheating. The best part of this is that I can take my “studio” anywhere at any time. I once wrote a piece called Riverboat Twilight while sitting on the upper deck of a Mississippi riverboat. Another time I sat next to a waterfall in a canyon of a local state park. Mostly, I like to sit outside on my back porch with a cool refreshing adult beverage, make my “music” and wave to the neighbors.

Anyway, I’m starting to ramble. I wish you well in your musical endeavors. It has been great for me since old age and arthritis have made things like golf, hockey, and other sports too difficult to really enjoy.

Let me know when you start posting. I’m looking forward to hearing what you create. Most of all, just have fun and don’t take criticism too seriously. Have a great weekend!
