watched anther documentary about how to make breakbeats.
it still has me wondering about how many people are making themselves liable for illegal sampling.
but the technique itself is still useful for remixing homemade recordings of live instruments/drums/etc.
i might hook up with a drummer, so it could still be useful to know the techniques and do it legally.

Congrats on the new subs!vurt wrote: Fri Jan 31, 2025 7:32 pm finishing up jamuary
all 31 days!!!! different patch each day, completely stripping down at the end of each session.
trying any silly idea i may have had, seeing if i can still discover new things? yes.
admittedly, not all those new things were awesomebut some nice moments along the way, a few standout pieces (for me), so pleased with the month.
also bagged 11 new subs![]()
I’m hoping to do more videos after this. I just need a good system for setting up what cameras and where. I also very stupidly forgot that 1010music BlueBox is a class compliant audio interface so I can stream audio directly to the phone or iPad.
I really don’t know why I couldn’t remember that. It would saved me some time troubleshooting.
Feels kinda weird not needing to put something up.

There’s also some different sample libraries of drummers that recorded drum loops to be used as breakbeats.mjolnir wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 2:37 am watched anther documentary about how to make breakbeats.

Then there should be some tools for converting an audio loop to midi. Ableton has a tool like that built-in, so maybe there’s another that’s not tied to Live.
Then there’s some transcriptions of different drum patterns, including jungle stuff, so you can program your own patterns too.
Tons of ways to do things without crossing those legal boundaries.

while what you said is true, there's a set of certain sounds which can't usually be obtained except for either recording a live drummer in a room or illegal sampling. it's just a certain kind of sound. i wish it weren't so, because the temptation is there, but that's the way it is.elxsound wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 3:29 amThere’s also some different sample libraries of drummers that recorded drum loops to be used as breakbeats.mjolnir wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 2:37 am watched anther documentary about how to make breakbeats.

but i definately agree with you that it's better to be legal and to do it whichever ways work legally.
i have been practicing how to program in breakbeats and ghost notes, and it's gradually working out.

You can get the same sound, but there are a number of steps to prep something before it sounds like something else. It means mixing, mastering, and then processing with effects to possibly simulate bit rate/sample rate and vinyl if looking for sounds as if sampled from vinyl.mjolnir wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 8:20 pmwhile what you said is true, there's a set of certain sounds which can't usually be obtained except for either recording a live drummer in a room or illegal sampling. it's just a certain kind of sound. i wish it weren't so, because the temptation is there, but that's the way it is.elxsound wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 3:29 amThere’s also some different sample libraries of drummers that recorded drum loops to be used as breakbeats.mjolnir wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 2:37 am watched anther documentary about how to make breakbeats.

You'll run into the same thing if recording a live drummer and again, don't forget the first part mentioned... there are libraries already of real drummers recording loops to be used for breakbeat (often playing well known sampled drum patterns, which is legal)

I've done a lot of drum sessions in an attempt to get the perfect break beat samples... if the process is fun for you then I would definitely encourage the endeavor. It's a lot of work but I learned a lot about mic techniques, how sound travels and how to minimize or maximize room sound. It's just like a lot of skills, you can't expect to get perfect (or even useable) results the first time.

I only looked at a couple of these and they seemed okay: https://www.bigfishaudio.com/Breakbeat-Loops.html
What I’d do is go down the rabbit hole of each vendor that you find something you like. For example, loopmasters has sales and there’s likely a way to get a library for cheaper than the sale price there.

On the face of it it was a tiny purchase but a ten quid stand for my laptop has now enabled me to scoot it to the side of my desk with leads, hubs, PSUs and drives beneath it. This has freed up enough room to have more modular racks on the desk at once or finally lets me use my Hydrasynth Deluxe on there again so I have that as my main MIDI controller keyboard again and enables me to play and view the DAW screen at the same time.
One thing that came to light - and I’d been pulling my hair out trying to work out what was going on with my audio inputs - was one of my quarter inch jack cables is no longer working. It never occurred to me those things failed so I was examining everything else until it was literally the only thing left.

Yesterday the Echo Cinematic module arrived and so I had to move other modules to put it where I had laid it out in modular grid previously. Then it was time to test it out so I connected the Kobol and monkeyed around with the controls- oh and I brought out Oxi one to sequence it. It all works and sounds great and I am tired because I was up ‘till midnight again.

Forgot the first rule of trying to get new gear to work properly, make sure it’s on the right firmware.
After a frustrating hour spent trying to polychain a minilogue xd keyboard and module it worked instantly after updating. Pretty impressive sound, will have to duplicate patches on both boxes.

* watched a documentary about the lead singer from Opus III (It's a Fine Day).
* thought about the dilemma of classic breakbeats vs illegal sampling (and was glad I didn't get deep into that).
* pondered getting some old junk hardware
* really got NOTHING DONE.

P.S.- I edited my REAPER preferences and default rendering settings and default project templates. I opted to switch to 192 BPM instead of 96 BPM for default projects so that the built-in input quantization defaults of 1/8th notes don't destroy my performances every time I want to play at 96 BPM. By doubling the BPM, it makes the 1/8th notes equally as fast as 1/16th notes at 96 BPM, which is exactly what I want.
It has the added benefit of making the metronome twice as fast which helps guide my timing a bit better. Technically it's really too fast to sound natural, but that gets hidden as soon as the metronome gets turned off. I freeze everything to WAV audio, so 192 becomes 96 BPM by virtue of the actual music recorded, not the damned program. I like playing up to 16th notes and not being limited to playing up to 8th notes, so it works out better this way. REALLY.
If you need and example, Mary Had a Little Lamb (the song) maxes out at 1/8th notes and a few quarter notes.

Made a short video using Multimod processing audio, fed from Morphagene. This is a Jamuary track rearranged for Morphagene, spliced in Reaper. Multimod's phase goes super wide, while time does this nice degradation vs saturation effect. Then some quick changes using shape.
I'm also getting used to pmod1 on Morphage. I don't know why I haven't used this mode before, but nice for staying mostly in time.
Plus, working on my camera setup/takedown game. I'm getting closer to marking up stuff with tape so I know what goes where.
I really wish quick releases for tripods were way cheaper than what I've been seeing, because that would be much easier, especially when things don't work correctly.
