Yes, sure. But "at any rate" is a bit too strong in my book :D

@mabian - this whole conversation makes me so sad that the vst3 api made note expressions so ugly. I can't wait for MIDI 2 UMP which will make communicating things like this so much easier. CLAP note expressions also allow lots of expression, and clap note expressions and poly mod *are* on the obxf roadmap, but post 1.0.

The problem with adding an ARP to obxf includes all the ones evil shared, and on top of that, requires us to write an arp, which we don't just have hanging around. (Unlike, say, a chorus which we do, making that a more tractable request but still one we won't put in this project for the release we plan). If you have an open source arp around or a closed source one you want to contribute, we could hack on it some though! You know where to reach me :)

Sure we can slap an Arpeggiator plugin before the OB-Xf and any number of effects after it but that would require the synth to blow me away sound wise in order to justify the effort since like most people here I have a lot of alternatives for making that type of sound and they do have those features already built in.

I don't remember any version of the OBXd blowing me away in the past but I am of course looking forward to hearing how this version sounds.

It is basically the same code DSP-wise, with some smaller changes in a few places (see first post for details on changes).

Am I missing something? Why do you say you have to wait? I have been playing with it for the last few days on Windows11 and it sounds great. Or is the Mac version not working or something? No patches, but who needs patches.

Edit: Nvm. Managed to make a ghetto dark theme in GIMP.

I'm ambivalent as to a built-in arpeggiator (and respect the devs' wishes either way), but since it came up, I think this is FOSS?: https://gitlab.com/LibreArp/LibreArp
Maybe someone else will decide they feel like adding it on? Who knows I guess. Just thought I'd leave it here.

Because I have no desire to spend my time with an early (and possibly wonky) version. I'll simply wait for the official release when it's announced here. I have no need for presets so that's not a factor.

But then I'm not desperate for a 2 Osc synth with limited features since I have a ton of other more capable options at my disposal. I've never been a fan of it's sound in the past and based on what has been written here today that's not likely to change.

However I will give it a fair go when it's released. Perhaps my opinion will change. I appreciate the work the Surge Team is doing, they simply picked a synth that would not have been my first choice for some open source love.

Thanks!

One of the neat things about the flexible team concept we have now is that we've solved a lot of the common infrastructure problems (how to make nightlies, how to do testing, how to maintain a nice community in discord etc...) which are a bottleneck, so we are increasingly getting people + projects coming to us, and that happened here, when two independent efforts by devs to revive the open side of OB-Xd converged with our tooling and (frankly) EvilDragon's long held desire to kinda fix this one up.

But think of it as a garden of riches. We got new devs coming along along with the work. Heck if you look at my GitHub commits for the last month, 90% are on short circuit or so, a good chunk are on OB-Xf infra, and a tiny bit of actual OB-Xf content (mostly work i did to fix up the VM).

So yeah may not be for you - that's fine! - but think of abundance not scarcity with capacity!

Now if only we could get the synth 1 source base.... we've tried....

We can get the Synth1 codebase. Here's an open call for reverse engineers to join our fray! :D
