Teksonik wrote: Wed Jul 23, 2025 2:24 pmSo exactly what I said....copying the work of others.
No, it is not the same thing.
Yes it is in practice.....and round and round we go.

Any attempt to copy or emulate Synth 1 without permission would be immoral and I don't care one bit what you think.

It's ok. It's ok to be wrong.

How would it be immoral to emulate Synth 1, when it started as an emulation of the Nord Lead 2 ?

The real question is why bother
How original

The real question is why bother
Because you can, because you want to, because it's there ?

Creativity and curiosity take many forms. Why do people make music in a genre that others already have ? Why are there many many LA2A emulations ?

Why not. If you want to build something, you absolutely should. Curiosity is valuable.

In an age where people see AI taking over, are we supposed to just go "Well, okay, AI is better - I won't bother" or instead follow our curiosity and wonder and build whatever we want ?

Reverse Engineering may not be for everyone, but that doesn't mean it's not worth the time. Most everyone actually reverse engineer things they see/hear but call it 'inspiration'. It perhaps doesn't end up in full emulation, but it's a similar process.

Wondering 'how' something works, and wanting to recreate it is a huge part of both learning and innovation. Many of us would take things apart when we were young (and still do) to see how they work.

really thanks for this, it was needed...

Just spent a few minutes whipping up some patches for this. Loving the sound. UI is responsive. Getting the results I would expect. Already an hour has passed. Very nice work, Surge team.

Teksonik - I agree we would only ever work on synth 1 with original authors blessing or with a clear open source release with license. As I said we tried to reach the author but failed much as it seems you have not had luck. If anyone does know them though and they are interested in open sourcing we’re here.

Audiojunkie - ha ha - yeah! Shortcircuit is still coming along nicely. People use it to make music already. Feel free to give it a whirl any time

There is a path of a "faithfull emulation". Regarding the current cult of emulations it is legal.
There's also "do something original without taking the work of others path". Never confuse legality with morality.
"Do something original"?

Synth1 is an emulation of the Nord Lead 2 synthesizer (if you didn't know):

It's not even an emulation, it's an inspired by.

Just like OB-Xf, in fact :)

Agree! Please consider to have better presets browser. Can be filtered by category, character, author, favorite etc.

My two cents would be: don't try to reverse or emulate Synth1. If it's a project that fancies the Surge team, just make a new Nord Lead 2 inspired freebie like Ichiro Toda originally did.

Not going to happen in v1.0, but we will see what happens after that.

There is nodal red 2x and its open source. You only need an .bin file to run it :)
