Depending on which part of the world you live in and whether you have the original synth, they are legal to use. Or maybe not. Or they are legal to use, but you could, in theory, receive a strongly worded cease-and-desist letter from Yamaha's legal team. Or they are illegal to use, but the law is impossible to enforce. Whether it is ethical or not depends a lot on your view of IP.

Exactly my impression. The differences between the original samples and those of sheaf are REALLY neglible. My initial want to use the original samples turned out to be completely nonsensical. On the other hand, I think the ability to use own samples and build custom banks will take this synth to new heights.MCMorrise wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 8:24 am Excellent work, sheaf. You got SUPER close to the SY77 wave ROM with most of the sounds you curated. It's hard to tell a difference switching between "PRESET" and "PRESET 77" waves while going through the factory presets. This is on my to-buy list for sure.
Thanks sheaf, great work. I demo´d for about a day and then purchased. Inspiring stuff!

The point of those synths was never about the samples, but rather the technology.

One thing I noticed about the product is there isn't currently a way to know how much the instrument costs on the web page.
There's a checkout but details need to be entered. That could be my browser but more transparency might be a good idea?

Fair enough it could be a browser thing. I suspected as much. Hopefully the feedback helps?Matt67 wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 1:06 pm I use Microsoft Edge and see the price right on the Swayed page.

That's odd! What browser and device are you using? If it's not too much to ask, could you take a screenshot of what you see?
Does it give an error message? Or what happens after you select the file?Artie Fichelle wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 1:11 pm I tried to import SY77 Sysex, but it did not work. Anyone knows how to?

It is legal to use them if you have a SY-77. (backup copy right)Teksonik wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 12:07 pm
I hate to be that guy again but someone has to ask.....are those .bin files legal to use?
If not then discussion of them should not be allowed at KVR.

In other words you don't have a clue. I will say this since we're on a site dedicated to the creation of Intellectual Property, it would hypocritical to advocate for the violation of IP rights. If you think it's perfectly fine to steal someone else's IP then it would be fine for someone to steal yours. Right? Potential criminal punishment or lack thereof does not factor into morality.ampetrosillo wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 12:21 pm Depending on which part of the world you live in and whether you have the original synth, they are legal to use. But if one is willing to compromise their morals for a few megs of ancient sample content then that speaks volumes about their character....or lack thereof.
There were discussions here that say you are wrong. That you don't in fact have the right to the sample content in a ROM even if you own the hardware. I'll refer you to Ivybirds since he and others held that stance. None of us are lawyers and it's a complex legal and moral issue but if there is any doubt the right thing to do is to err on the side of caution.benedettodue wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 1:36 pm It is legal to use them if you have a SY-77. The fact that Sheaf did not include the Factory ROM content apparently for fear of repercussions tells us all we need to know. Let's not put his project in jeopardy by advocating the illegal use of IP.
I know that legislating morality here is a hopeless endeavor but KVR used to be a place that staunchly defended Intellectual Property rights. If they've changed that stance or no longer care then it's possible they could suffer consequences for allowing such actions and discussions to occur within the pages of this forum.

I am, in fact, a Marxist (sort of... more of a post-Marxist if you were to nitpick). Morality has little meaning to me, in the sense that it is ultimately a personal and not societal concept. By the way, you are blurring the lines between ethics (correct, not correct) and morality (right, wrong). I think it is you who doesn't have a clue about the words you use so much (not a problem, per se) and you are imposing your worldview upon me and others (the actual problem).Teksonik wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 2:23 pmIn other words you don't have a clue. On a final note: I haven't actually said where I stand on this particular issue. What I can say is that it's Yamaha's problem, if at all.
