Yeah, it's like the philosophical basis of how you approach it.

I'd personally rather have a piece of software that does a few things really well, than software that does lots of things, but is mediocre.
If it's a joy to use in the first place, it is motivating to work with it.

And: having lots of options, ostensibly to let the user decide, can be an indication of a lack of decisiveness, when it comes to software design.

Being paid for, or expensive, does not necessarily mean that the software is actually good.

Klanghelm, for example, makes plugins that are extremely low price, but deliver world class sound, features and software quality.

There are also lots of other criteria: Adobe Photoshop is incredible software, but at the same time total crap, because of the subscription model.

Reaper is a fantastic Windows DAW, but crap on Mac, because the dev does not understand (or care about) basic Mac software and UI conventions.
Can you still make good music with it? Of course. Is doing so enjoyable? Not so much.

What is the best value one?
VeeSeeVST or SynC Modular are free. Not the best ones. Both developments stopped. Synthedit is free/commercial and allows direct vst3 export, external module development and customized graphics, some people ignores how Synthedit works and write tales of mistery & imagination about how Synthedit perverted VST2 although they never used it...
