Could someone please explain anti-loop snobbery?

if it's not okay to use a drumloop, is it okay to use a one-shot sample? After all, someone else made it/recorded it.
I do use loops from time to time but only percussive and only when I don't know how to achieve that particular sound myself.

- Me:
Hello, my Name is chris.
- Group:
Hello Chris !
- Me:
I´m a bass player and . . .
I´ve been using drumloops for over 3 years.
- A few people are nodding knowingly.
- Me:
At a party I was introduced to this guy.
He seemed friendly at first. And he gave me a CD-Rom, so I could jam to it. . . . That´s how it started.
I thought I could quit anytime I wanted.
I was so wrong.
Soon I found myself downloading every Drumloop I found, bought every Loop Collection I could get my hands on.
I spend every dime on loops.
Soon I lost contact to my best friend. . . .
. . .
A drummer.
- Group:
Oooh.
- Me:
That´s when I knew it had to stop. . . .
I´am now loopfree since yesterday.
- Group applauds.
- Me:
With you´re help . . . together . . .
I´ve got the feeling I can do it.
(sobs) … I … I can become a real musician.
(starts to cry)
- Group gives standing ovations.

probably already been said (like I'm gonna trawl thru 15 pages of this shit) but most of the music I listen simply would not exist without the invention of the sampler. To me using samples is very similar to using a drumloop. Which in turn is kinda similar to using session musicians.

Funny... Collage and using Found Objects have been accepted and respected techniques, in fine art, for decades now. However, when it comes to music it seems to be an uphill battle for artists, that use similar techniques, to gain respect.
Ok, this is gonna smart... but I really think most of this is due to the fact that so many musicians are remarkably insecure and feel the need to use their level of manual dexterity and proficiency, with their chosen instrument, as an extension of their personal identity and self worth. Hence the snobbish and arrogant attitude towards those that don't rely on manual dexterity in the creation of music. This also becomes a way for them to indirectly brag about their abilities by putting down the work of others. The same goes for people that expound on "killer" guitar solos ad nauseum. It becomes a way for them to vicariously imply that their taste and abilities are the same as the artists that they admire.
IMO, music is not just about manual dexterity but mood, emotion and composition. These can be achieved with and without manual dexterity. Perhaps it would be better to differentiate between musicians and composers in this regard. One does not need to play an instrument to compose a piece of music.
Ultimately who gives a f**k whether it’s accepted or not?

I agree. the word 'producer' springs to mind too.JohnVulich wrote: IMO, music is not just about manual dexterity but mood, emotion and composition. Everything in its place I reckon. I'm a guitar-based musician but I use loops in partnership with more live-sounding drums to add texture. Were I a dance musician I would probably use them more, because real drums wouldn't fit. But I would be less inclined to use them on their own when the real instruments and real (ie non-sequenced) performances come out - because it's limiting to groove and feel to have only one instrument doing the same thing over and over.
I see loops as a building block, but I'd never build out of them alone.

Chris...that's hysterical!
Moi, I don't get it...I know when I'm french-kissing the muse and when I'm inflamed by that particular fire it don't make no difference to me what I'm using...my fingers, loops, instruments, yesterday's newspapers...I figure everything is fair game for the blender of creativity...
I also know when I'm forcing something and at that point, it doesn't make a difference if I'm playing something with pyrotechnical skill...It's still horse-turds in my ears. In all, I'm much more concerned about coming up with something that is paint-by-the-numbers and perfunctory than I am about using found sounds, loops (which I generally mangle at any rate), etc.
Of course, I think maybe about two or three people listen to my stuff -and they don't comment on it- so it all seems a bit moot at any rate.
