eXT automatically detects if the destination is a VST param, a mixer fader of just plain simpe midi mapping (then it uses 7-bit of course). Its always using highest possible resolution.
I ran a little experiment just now with v1.4 beta 12-june-2005. I made a wav of a constant +16384 value, a couple seconds long, loaded it into an audio track in a sequencer, automated the sequencer mixer volume control with an envelope ramping from min to max values, and rendered it to a wav. I got 128 or so (hard to count them all) volume steps, each about 2300 - 2500 samples long. So the mixer faders seem to have 128 steps. Or does it just look this way as a result of what you say here:

exactly, fix coming in the beta.

Now there's been some discussion here about how the "High res" setting on envelopes works when the envelope is sent directly to a VST, but not when the envelope is used to control an insert VST using "Send MIDI to inserts". I've verified this by using a shallow ramp envelope to control the frequency of a filter used as an insert, and the filter's frequency changes only every second or so for both MIDI res and High res.

So, is High res supposed to do ultra smooth cc changes for inserts, or not? It sure would be great if it did.

Curiously, http://www.xt-hq.com/ no longer says "The MIDI envelope doesn't only send out ultra smooth cc changes, but can also be routed to any VST param loaded in energyXT". I wonder if that's a hint?

I prefer using midi cc's then enveloppe for automation of vst paramaters...it's more intuitive for me...(midi lfo..midi seq..etc)....theres 128 values to control a parameter...I often dont like the zippering effect..Do you guys think it would be possible to smooth the values between the midi data and the vst parameter?...is it something possible? There must be a way technically to create this change.

Many plugins are doing it allready, so it should be possible.

Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Heh, here's what I do. I set up a knob on my controller to control the parameter I want, and record CCs in real time to get the approximate effect I want. This works much better for me than trying to record mouse tweaks on a VST gui in real time, which currently can't be done in eXT anyway. Then I make an envelope that looks like my CC track because it's easier for me to edit, and, I THOUGHT, provided smoother automation. So what I'd really like is a CC to envelope converter.

I wonder if the plugins that do smoothing are using lookahead to see what CC values are coming up. eXT could certainly do it internally and output "High res" data from CCs.

that would be great...because i have tons of cc data sequence on my computer but theres no question i'll start making 100 envelope sequence again...done it with cc's and it was very long work.
