Today i started learning better how to use LMMS.
It turns out that it's not as hard as I thought to add melodies to the "beat/bassline" editor and song editor
Image
As it turns out, you can make a full rhythm in the step editor, then clone it into different variations.
Along the way, you can add pitched instruments and then tweak them in the pianoroll. I found out that a pattern could just have one melodic part in it within the song editor. And multitple patterns can play simultaneously in the song editor.
So ultimately, you can create full tune by pseudo"overdubbing" melodic parts to go with the drum chains.

I'm happy that it's versatile this way. After I get more ideas down, then I will export the stems into REAPER.

So after watching a few videos people have done with the Spice it seemed a lot of the more musical sounding examples weren’t using the onboard sequencers at all.
I pushed a tune at it through MIDI and then by playing the second frequency knob and filter cutoff it seems to be a fine way to produce chords. So, yes, a fun aimless jam machine but also a nice sounding duo-phonic synth module too.
Oh and there’s also some MIDI cc control over the vco frequency and a few vcf things too, annoyingly though neither cutoff nor resonance which is mildy derp.

Have the bones of a tune with that, K2 for bass, D16’s 808 on drums and some shimmery Tele stuff on top.

Are you safe?

Had to make sure the new modules worked so I did that and then some arranging decisions for the modular out thing I started. It's often hard to know how much bass to put in, not so much that it hogs up the entirety of the output, yet enough to be meaningful. I am trying to make things play off of each other and I end up with something that sounds robotic. Ambient is easier for not sounding robotic but then you can hit the opposite problem of making something that can sound wondering. Should I embrace the robotic sound of the euro rack? Or should I cut-and-paiste until ...

I started messing around with the FL Studio demo again.
Usually I only use the step editor in demo / trial mode and export stems into REAPER.
But this time I tried to actually use the song timeline for drag and drop of WAV files and also to schedule patterns.
I got a nice tune structure happening and it blossomed into this in REAPER (very bad mix, but okay musical ideas):

I really might just buy FL Studio instead of just always using weaker freewares.
The step editor really gets me through and it works somewhat better than LMMS / Hydrogen.
The timeline song stuff ain't that shabby either. I don't really know how to use FL Studio that well, but...
Maybe it's time.

Also,....

I figured out that I ought to just use the Windows version of REAPER to overcome the Wine-Staging v9.22 graphics UI bugginess. The audio drivers in WINE are a little buggy, but at least I get my VSTs back.
I'm happy that I have any kind of working system.

Nothing much today, but back up my DAW computer to external HD.
I upgraded Reaper and OcenAudio and my Linux OS. Every main system thing is mostly running okay.

finished building furniture, next up, rewiring :o

I’m still fighting my way through setting up the new computer. Changes always requires new cables and new adapters.

Sadly, no exceptions. One more cable delivery and I should be good.

I feel your pain. This was during my last studio rebuild:

tonight, i emptied a 50 litre storage box, which was filled with various xlr, ts, trs and midi cables.
this is even before i get to the power supplies box... :o
then there's the hifi separates cables and speaker cables somewhere in here.

ill be surprised if i don't trip at some point.

i miss working with cables and hardware. it was very meditative and easier to remember (muscle memory, perhaps).
all i've done lately is just delete some unneeded files from my DAW and wonder what to do with way too many tiny homemade snippets.
Do I turn them all into ringtones? damn.

I still have crates full of audio and midi cables, from back in the day when it was all hardware in my studio. Back then, I had over a kilometer total of audio and midi cables together. I know this because I made all these cables myself and bought the actual cable in bulk.

Before I rewired my studio at the beginning of the year, the cabling situation was out of control.

I got a bunch of custom made 8-channel snakes made by Redco and that has helped a lot but I still have to tell me wife before I go behind the racks, in case she needs to send a search party.

This would be the search party:

I'm done with tracking/editing and I'm almost ready to start mixing my next EP. I think folks will be surprised. It's a bit of a departure for me but it's been a lot of fun. This will be the first time I actually aimed for a specific genre.

I've also started tracking sessions for two new projects. The first will be an noisy ambientish EP/album featuring my Serge modular and Arp 2600. The other will be a bunch of tracks that I've written with my eurorack modular, Octatrack and Analog RYTM.

I'm swamped with projects for clients (yay!) but I hope to have more time for my own projects in 2025!

Today I messed around with assigning external MIDI editors to Reaper. It turned out okay, but not as good as I'd liked.
Also, I kinda noticed that I get overwhelmed at about 20 stereo tracks and have difficulty composing past that lately.
I used to be able to go up more than that if I was careful. I need audio crutches or to switch to hardware I think.

i also tried OpenMPT and my eyes glazed over as I went braindead... too much for me.
