RS9 eurorack drum sequencer arrived so had to shuffle around a bunch of modules in my racks to get the big old thing to fit as it’s 52 hp. Only bigger module I own is the 960 sequencer.
Good fun last night and I think it will be my main clock source now, seems rock solid.
The manual is shite though, it’s not a manual just a “what’s on the buttons” guide.
Hope there are some decent explainers somewhere for probability, accents etc.

I'm trying to do some curation of samples and IRs at the moment, to speed up decision-making when feeling more creative.
Browsing IRs is generally quite a slow/frustrating process as one is mostly choosing between mics and mic positions that essentially just a give a different EQ curve on the overall character. So I'm trying a different approach:
- choose a "reference" IR with somewhat useful frequency balance.
- for different speakers, find a somewhat-close IR, EQ it to broadly match the reference, and bake to a new IR.
Then from the new collection, I can quickly A/B or scroll through IRs to hear the different "texture" of the speakers and independently play with the frequencies using EQ.
MCabinet seems a very productive tool to adjust EQ of an IR, and MConvolutionEZ is quite a good playback option as the IR selection (within folder) can be automated or assigned to a macro control using DAW features. SlickEQ GE is then a nice post-eq for fast and broad changes (including stepped controls and a tilt band).
So far I have done four for scooped/heavy guitar tones; bass cabs and bright cleans should be different folders.

Last night I finally created a wavetable on the 3rd wave. I used the Prologue out and after a few practice rounds got something OK. Created a patch that uses it.
Today the Metal Fetishist arrived early and I was so excited I hooked it up to play
Surprising amount in a little package
from a 32-step turing-like sequencer, to a HP/LP switchable filter with shape controls. It will sit next to my case so that Pamela's Workout can control or clock it.

today I installed AirWindows Consolidated on Linux.
the install was super easy (drag the VST3 stuff into the .vst3 folder, drag the CLAP stuff into the .clap folder).
i haven't been able to concentrate much on music lately, but I have some ideas about rhythm tracks
also, I've been trying to figure out alternatives to computer based production. So, i've been watching some YouTube reviews of other gear.

Working on a study of Xaoc Odessa (during a kind of busy time, so it's happening gradually).
It's probably the simplest of the modules I've written up so far. But Spectraphon is next and is going to be a doozy.

Worked on a couple of songs that I'm woefully behind on, but also received a new synth (Michigan Synth Works Xena) a few days earlier than expected, so I got lost in that for a few hours.

tried to compose with samples only.
...only to discover that too many of the samples aren't in tune!
...kinda wasted my time.
...also tried AnalogX AutoTune to fix the samples, but that didn't fully work and didn't tune all the dawn to the purest of pitches.
so I learned my lesson.
double check that the downloaded freebies are actually in tune!

Oh! Just today Xoac released a video of that and I heard it for the first time. Amazing sound. Already considering it for the 60hp open spot.foosnark wrote: Tue Dec 17, 2024 3:47 pm Working on a study of Xaoc Odessa (during a kind of busy time, so it's happening gradually).

One of my coworkers is a singer and amazing saxophonist in a few local bands, so he stopped by this evening after work and laid down a killer sax solo on my 15th annual Christmas collab song with Avonlea. It was the first time I’ve ever recorded a sax, I think. Recording her vox tomorrow evening.

So, I'm getting more serious about going DAWless but I still tend to fuss with my DAW computer.
Today I erased everything (after backing up) and experimented with LMDE Cinnamon instead of my usual Linux with XFCE. It's a little bit less responsive and less obvious, but it's basically okay. I'm going to mess around with Wine "Bottles" if I can. For now, I'm kind of just test driving LMDE to see if I'm missing out on anything. Call it distro hopping if you will.
Meanwhile, I still can't quite make up my mind about which DAWless centerpiece tool to pick.

No smoke or fires during power up?
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

So I reinstalled my DAW computer from scratch & backups. I'm not sure why, but it seems slightly more responsive.
I haven't even yet configured it for DAW use. Nonetheless, all the Linux basics are working and thank god I have my backups to speed up configuration. Pipewire seems okay too so far.
Since my hard drive is so small, I'm leaving out some backup items so I can regain more space for audio projects. And since I've been having trouble concentrating, I'm taking a break from composing to review the Linux DAW configuration stuff.
Last but not least, I'm taking this as an opportunity to thin out my VST/CLAP/LV2 collection. It was just getting too huge to be efficient. I reinstalled Yoshimi, Surge XT, and ZynAddSubFX, but I'm slowing down after that. No more 350 plugins. I need to get it down to like 75. I will probably install the Dead Duck plugins, a few GVST's, and the Terry West plugins amongst a few others.
Hopefully when I'm done, my system will be leaner and my mind will be ready to work on tunes again.

They stole most of my thunder with that "simple tricks" video.
Guess I will dig into Spectraphon when we get back from Christmas travels.
