I had to use a trick to avoid the problem with one presets... (the freeze thing made my mind up). I published a work in progress of the song if someone want to listen to some (I think nice) presets I had fun to create with this vst (still there are some unwanted wrong sounds, but it's just a 1% of the song) http://soundcloud.com/vanmorrison/last- ... anmorrison

Hi Sauli, not 100% sure, but I think any and all kind of automation is fine as long as it's the synth being automated. For automation of external effects then I guess the 'unrecognizable' factor comes in, so that should be done with more care.sauli wrote:So what's the general opinion when it comes to automation?
The rules sayIn a way automation could be considered an effect, so I just want a clarification of what is ok - direct modulation? only modulation via midi? anything as long as it doesn't make it "unrecognisable" (like using million lfo's and curves in a fancy way)? All Fx used must .....
**be freeware, and easily available via download.
**generally usable in a wide range of hosts
**not be used in such a way as to transform the sounds to a degree
which makes them unrecognisable as those achievable from Chimera

Yeah, V'ger is right. Automation is fine, whether on the synth parameters or the settings of permitted fx. However, this should not be used to an extent which misrepresents the capabilities of the synth.
Now, I have an announce something I hoped not to have to announce.
I have made no secret of the fact that I have been struggling to devote the right level of time and energy to running OSC over the past 6 months. Furthermore, it is becoming harder with each passing week.
The toughest part for myself is that whenever I get a break, I am tempted into promising to do stuff, as things turn out, I cant fulfill ... and whilst I apologise freely and sincerely, I still feel bad about this.
So, I'm afraid I am going to have to step aside as OSC organiser after I launch the the xmas comp ( any-one-synth challenge ).
I am very proud to have run things so far. it has been a lot of fun, and I am very grateful for the support at all levels ... contributors, prize donors, KVR ( and Meffy for encouragement and the stickies ), the voters, and anyone and everyone who has as much as posted on the threads.
But it's not all over folks ... OSC is way bigger than tattiemannie ... also, I am not about to disappear. I am particularly grateful to V'ger for transforming the profile and procedures re. OSC via his input, and the building of the kvrosc site. Without V'gers help, I would have had to give up a long time ago.
So I suggest that in the meantime, OSCers bear with me and excuse my shortcomings while we take a look at how OSC moves forward.
I also recommend that if V'ger is willing to take the lead in running the comps, that the OSC community give him as much support, help, and backing as I have enjoyed to date. I think V'ger has shown that he would do an excellent job in running the comps.
I advise V'ger, or whoever takes over the running, not to do this alone. I would recommend that someone takes on the job of communicating with the prize donors and dealing with the distribution of prizes. This is very important ... and yet, an area which I have not been able to take care of as well as I would have liked to. This job could also involve contacting the developers of featured synths when comps are launched ( or ahead of the launch ) hopefully to have the devs involved.
This would leave the lead organiser to concentrate on the day to day running of the comps.
I recommend that when V'ger or another takes over the running that rules, norms, procedures etc be reviewed so that those currently active have a say in how we proceed towards the end of our second year. Much of what is understood between OSCers is based on what was laid down back in Feb/Mar 09 ... So maybe time for a shake up, with the reassurance that all that's good about OSC will survive a good shake, and maybe fresh ideas will find a way in.
It is not at all easy to step back from what has been a big part of my life over the past 20 months, and so I am not going to be far away. I will still be available to help, advise, discuss, etc ... and of course, will always try to write a track and add my votes/comments.
I am going to paste this same message into the other current OSC thread so you all know, and can have a think about things. It may be an idea to create a new thread to thrash things out.

Hi, "Air" is my submission for osc-21.
It's been done on Cubase Studio 4 with 8 instances of Chimera, 2x TAL DUB II (send), Cubase Studio 4 Stereo Enhancer, and TLs Maximizer.
Hope you like it

Oh well folks, without having listened to any tracks, I can say very well done to those who have submitted so far.
Why? Because I've taken my own Chimera track beyond drums and bass, and what a fkn nightmare
Strange stuff now happening ... I've saved, closed, opened, saved again, played, paused, played again, rendered, re-rendered, and I'm getting to the stage of looking out the hammer ... despite the fact I know that whatever is hammerable is not the problem!
I start, and all sounds are white noise ... I stop, play again and one by one, they to sound like they are supposed to .. and then some disappear.
I render, and sounds are missing!
Also, now with 9 instances, the project takes ages to load .... rendering takes ages, the rendered track does not only have sounds missing, but remaining sounds inexplicably varying in volume.
I persevere, but strange things happen ... my antivirus closes, tabs on my toolbar open and close unrelated programs/windows .... this synth has all the hallmarks of a 'delete as soon as poss' application. I'm finished for now, and I will persevere .... and I will somehow get a track together ... but sorry Majken, on this here PC, this synth is history when the job is done.
.... well, maybe not ... some cool sounds from this beast .. unique sounds ... I may do some sampling for future use, but other than that, Chimera is way too unstable and unpredictable.

I am having similar problems right now. I'm running 7 instances in FL Studio 9, and things are starting to act a little strange. Some of the tracks do not produce sound at all now... and which tracks work and which don't seem to change randomly each time I start up my DAW. Also some tracks sound blown out for a few bars and then go back to normal. Project load and pre-render times are very long.
I am starting to head down the path of creating a separate project for each track, with only a single Chimera instance... and then exporting each to wav and mixing them back together. This is workable for the contest but certainly not ideal. Does anyone have solutions/workarounds for this problem?
This synth is really cool and unique... would love to keep using it.

I've experienced similar issues in Cubase Studio 4: in particular, the project takes ages to load, and sometimes the recalled presets aren't the same I've saved before... This is why yesterday I uploaded an early (but "stable") version of my track.

I'm sorry for the problems some people are having. I suppose I could try to download the latest version of SynthEdit, resave Chimera and see if that makes a difference. I kind of doubt it though.
Chimera has a ton of connections internally and is a pretty complex SynthEdit plug-in. Running ten instances or so is bound to cause some problems sooner or later. While SynthEdit does have a fair share of odd bugs I have to say that it does an impressive job. I've tried other modular environments and none can cope with the same amount of connections and still run with low cpu load.
Here's what the first level of Chimera looks like on the inside in case anyone is interested in what's going on behind the scenes:

Great to see and hear the contributions, again thanks everyone!

Jesus. No wonder it sounds so rich. Might possibly the early version of synthedit. I've heard there were all sorts of issues with it. Nice to see that you're listening to our stuff Majken. I'm sure some of us would be happy to let you embed a track or two on your site. If you can get this synth working solidly, have you thought about going on to do a paid-for (supported) synth?

Wow thats scary Majken
... however, scarier still is the fact that I've spent a couple of hours attempting to render individual tracks, and they've rendered wrong!
I dont know what I can do next, I may have to sit this one out I'm afraid. I tried rendering one instrument at a time from a saved version with only Kik, hat, Snare and bass, and the tracks are Fkd Up .... I dont know if I'll have the time to try again ... certainly not this week, but I may try limiting ( from within FL ) the drums and bass to mono and see if that makes any difference .. but for now, I'm stuffed!

Wow indeed, I knew things were complex under the hood even with Synthedit, but not like this..
But impressed with the entries so far, good stuff.

I just tried to grab the latest version of SynthEdit to resave Chimera. But I'm missing a User ID and password. Things have changed since I last used SynthEdit. I've emailed Jeff, with some luck I'll be up and running within a couple of days. With even more luck resaving the plug-ins solves some problems and doesn't introduce new ones.
V'ger:
My plug-ins are all kinds of crazy on the inside. It's mostly about trying to save cpu. I tried going the opposite direction with Disorder, but lo and behold. It never even got finished!

Jeff's a quick bugger, he's already got me setup with the login stuff. But sweet jesus, the Chimera resave went all kinds of wrong. Now I've got a version of Chimera that crashes SynthEdit when being run in the audio engine and goes silent when saved as a VST. I'll have to dig deeper to see if I can fix it. Again, sorry for the problems everyone!
EDIT:
Aha! SynthEdit shows up as unregistered causing CK's modules to crash. I've e-mailed Jeff again to see if I can get SynthEdit back to being registered. Guessing my key is outdated, it's from 2003 or so.
