Most excellent my friend. And btw, Frantz, I hear what you're saying but I suppose my ears are used to overly high pitched frequency. Personally, I would have EQ'd that drone differently but overall I think it fits the piece quite nicely.

But hey, that's what WIP is all about right? Work in progress!!!

You're definitely making progress with this one Tim.

Cheers!!!

Thanks for the listen and the enthusiasm, S1gns. Glad you liked it :)

I have a couple of changes planned for this in the next few days. Some slight mods to the percussion and maybe the addition of a soft bass towards the end.

I uploaded a newer version to Soundcloud yesterday with slightly less excitable HF components from that first reverbed drone.

Good stuff Seismic...I like the way the changes come naturally at 2 min and 4 min, a cool progression to it. Like the outro. Good sounds.

Spek looks interesting. Caused to think about sounds up very high and quiet, as an alternative to actual silence.

I uploaded a "tamed HF" version to SoundCloud about 36 hours ago.

Heel hartelijk bedankt :)

Is it only the SoundCloud link that has the new version? Nothing in the first one bothered me, but having read the thread I'm curious to hear the second.
Thanks very much for listening and commenting DHM. Glad you liked it :)

I hope you managed to evaluate and enjoy the effects of Seismic sedatives.

Yep. Only the SoundCloud version has the updated mix. Just a little cleaner in the HF. If you click on the download control in the embedded player, you should be able to get hold of it. about 15Mb (320 Kbps mp3)

Very smooth and mellow sounds in this, fantastic mixing too. didn't seem like six minutes...very enjoyable. :)

Spek is a terrific free cross-platform spectrogram app. Just drag and drop audio files onto it and you get an instant spectrum analysis.
I really like the simplicity of spek. Very appealling.

I also installed Sonogram SG-1. This can be loaded inside the sequencer as a VST insert on the Master bus, or indeed on individual instrument channels.

Thanks to NAD for bringing these to my attention:-

Interestingly, there are a few differences between your image made from the mp3 and the image I made from the source wav file, particularly at high freqs.

Teenbuzz is great for getting my son's attention :hihi:

I may revisit those 9.5kHz frequencies again, next time I update this track.

How does the MP3 in the original post sound to you? Are the frequencies irritating?

Well its definitely got a bright sound to it. I like the drone, but ya you are right about the higher frequencies. I can't really hear the noise but there is some kind of high frequency crowding in this track that makes it difficult for me to enjoy.

The sound design and drone itself are excellent sounding though, maybe just a bit of EQ work on the higher frequencies.

Cheers

I've eq'd some of the HF down on the SoundCloud version and might adjust the high-cut filter in Shimmer next time I make any mods to this track.

Comparing the WAV and MP3 in Spek is an interesting idea. MP3 is lossy. Naturally some of that compression is reducing high frequency information.

This is the problem I have with digital audio. With recordings of the 70s and 80s, if there were any extreme frequencies, they were rolled off by the mixing desk, tape, or the mastering process. But when I check out tracks here on KVR made ITB (In The Box), some of them unintentionally include frequencies that I find painful. Image

I would appreciate an EQ cut in that range. I'm sure no one else minds but I find those frequencies in your track unpleasant.

Really cool stuff man :)
Nice spaced out beats. I would like to try my hands on such a piece someday, mine tend to get very busy. This has more patience to it.

Had another go and really enjoying this piece Tim. It reminds me somewhat of Spacetime Continuum's Sea Biscuit disc.

Than outro is CM101 through REFLEX Free. Tasty little combo.

spek is showing me things that I already knew, but had difficulty quantifying, and I think will prove to be useful QC tool in the future.

I've just uploaded a tweaked version with a Shimmer HF tweak, added SampleMoog Taurus and made a couple of minor mastering EQ changes.

I compared all 3 versions of this. There are obvious sonic differences between the original and the 3/14 version.

The differences between 3/14 and 3/17 are quite subtle with respect to HFs. I had to A/B them several times to make sure I could hear the difference. They both have sustained notes at 9.5kHZ but they dissipate more quickly in the 3/17 version. For me, the 3/17 version is subtly better but still too shrill for my tastes.

I think you should leave the HFs since they sound good to you. My only suggestion is to play the track on a completely different system at some point. If I recall correctly, you are monitoring using an old amp or speakers. There is a possibility that your sound system is rolling off the HFs and you are adding more to compensate.
