Now they need to work on the sequencer side of Reason. It's still not fluid in the workflow especially with all those hot-keys in the pianoroll. Beside that this RE is smarter then making reason a VST. Now Reason will be again the Center of the attention rather then being just a VST for other DAWs....

I wonder if people will bother to buy a reason Re instrument if they already own te VSTi?
When I buy a vst I can use it in cubase, live or maschine....if it was a case of vst or Re I think I would go vst, unless people start bundling free Re versions?
I'm still not sure I get this unless the main plan is to sell add ins to people who only use Reason.

True. But you can still use those VST in rewire mode.... a pain thoughSLiC wrote:I wonder if people will bother to buy a reason Re instrument if they already own te VSTi?

I can't possibly imagine this not being the case....SLiC wrote:............

I imagine for Reason users this must be a great addition. For ex Reason users, maybe some will start back using Reason, I fit in this category but I won't... But for those who don't use Reason, I think life goes on as before.

I would hope that we see this where when you buy komplete you also get Re along with vst/au/rtas/aax in the future.SLiC wrote:I wonder if people will bother to buy a reason Re instrument if they already own te VSTi?

no purchase until everything goes to usb 3.0 and all hosts are 64 bit!

A nightmare in some ways perhaps, but also a new opportunity and revenue source.zvenx wrote:yes but if you aren't on reason it is.....plus especially with small developers yet another format with its own bugs etc.....must be a nightmare for them....
The devs I know get pretty excited about this sort of thing!

Ok, I'm trying to understand this new thing:
- vst/plugin developer needs to:
build up and maintain knowledge of reason rack API+standard/guidelines
Quality Assurance (bug squashing/testing) needs to be done on reason
CV/GATE in/out functionality needs to be implemented
new UI according to props standard/guidelines
A business contract etc. has to be written between props and 3rd party(?)
Plugin can be superseded with a Propellerhead Reason plugin (or plugin
from other 3rd party developer).
Theoretically: Props have an advantage in that they will know how many
copies of a certain plugin is sold and then adjust their developing
priorities accordingly.
How much QA are props going to do (code inspection/performance tests
etc?) for new 3rd party plugins?
70/30 model of Apple has been criticized as being 'expensive'.
Will a plugin owner invest more money in a reason compatible version of
the plugin?

Yes. And I think this essentially guarantees the future of the Reason platform.zvenx wrote:I can't possibly imagine this not being the case....SLiC wrote:............

After years of resisting user requests for audio recording, plug ins, MIDI out, and some other things... Propellerhead find themselves in the fortunate position of still enjoying a large market share and a loyal user base. BUT the rest of the audio software world has moved very rapidly in the last few years: the VST/RTAS synth, sampler and effects plug ins are now much more diverse and in some cases far higher quality that Reason's devices, most DAW software offers far more editing and audio features, etc. So I think that to stay in the game and provide a platform that remains viable for its own (and possibly still some new) users this was an essential move for them.
I'm curious and excited to see what developers bring to the table. I hope that we will see stuff that isn't just VST ports, but which takes advantage of Reason's unique strengths. If so then Propellerhead will have scored a major goal.

I hope NI jump in and make a basic, no-frills Kontact rack item. I would love to start using my Steve Slate Drums in Reason!

Several already are, and I guess they see this as a useful way to expand their businesses.rkn wrote: Will a plugin owner invest more money in a reason compatible version of

However, I really hope that at some point Propellerhead will stop their nasty implications that all the VSTs in the world are unstable and will crash your computer! I bet there are a fair few major plugin developers who would rather not do business with Propellerhead because they have put up with years of Propellerhead making false claims against them...
I just hope that Propellerhead haven't shot themselves in the foot with too many of the big players (NI, IK, etc). Time will tell.

Quick note, as far as I know I don't think any current plug-ins are sandboxed? Maybe AAX? Have to look into it but that is a surefire way that a Rack Extension can't crash more than itself.headquest wrote:Several already are, and I guess they see this as a useful way to expand their businesses.rkn wrote: Will a plugin owner invest more money in a reason compatible version of

Also I urge everyone to check out the video when it's posted in a few hours as there were a lot of things said that didn't make it in the news that explains some of the advantages of Rack Extensions from a developer's point of view.
I'll answer questions best I can but this was an early tech preview and we can't talk about everything.
