ha ha, you probably spent more on patch cables than some others have spent on their studiosjustin3am wrote:My workspace is a total mess right now. I'm really bad about putting my toys away.![]()

This is what my studio looks like when it's being used. It cleans up pretty well when I move on to the mixing phase of a track. It could also be a lot messier. There are hundreds of meters of cable which are currently out-of-sight. Thank goodness for patch bays.

BONES asks me;
Looking at Justin3am's setup. How does that make you feel?
1mg of lorazepam and a treated room.That still doesn't answer the question - how do you deal with the noise?

Actually Justin, my question was aimed at BONES referring to his dislike of analog routing and inherent noise.

No worries, I understood the point of your post. I've gotten some inspiration from your studio, and that's what I like about this thread. I don't really see any point to criticizing or questioning the reasoning for, the way another person works. It's all good... why am I blathering on, this thread is about studio pics and gear porn!annode wrote:Actually Justin, my question was aimed at BONES referring to his dislike of analog routing and inherent noise.

I just finished building an interface for connecting FX pedals to my modular and I left all my soldering stuff out.
mine's a mess too, I know the feeling...not just toys though...it seems to be a catchall for a lot stuff. Believe it or not almost 11 months and I'm not even 1/4 done unpacking, one whole bay of my garage is still stuffed full. A lot of that is stuff from my mom's condo because I emptied that 5 months before we moved but of course most of it is Denise's stuff/our stuff. I do have a new friend now and often find things in the garage, so as not to offend anyone into the studio they go...gonna be a studio/shrine

Why would it make me feel anything? I don't have to use it but I'd be equally interested to know how he deals with the noise. By this stage I am assuming you don't deal with your noise at all, you just put up with it. Am I right?annode wrote:Looking at Justin3am's setup. How does that make you feel?

It depends. In some cases I embrace the noise. But noise caused by grounding or power distribution issues are generally not useful. Clean power, a common reference to 0v and a low resistance path to earth ground are pretty critical to getting all of this stuff to talk to each other without causing problems. And balanced cables, where possible.BONES wrote:Why would it make me feel anything? I don't have to use it but I'd be equally interested to know how he deals with the noise. Noisy pre-amps and cross-talk in mixers don't bother me much. I often run things through several gain stages, just because they impart a character I like and noise can be a big part of that character.
Some pedals are really susceptible to interference but they have a sound I like. If I can get away with it, I'll use a gate (if the noise is quiet enough, relative to the signal) or some EQ to get rid of any problem frequencies. If the problem is wide-band garbage, I'll just try something else. Sometimes just turning off other electronics will help with those kinds of problems. I also use weird pickups and transducers which are designed to measure that kind of interference and noise from different kinds of electronics and use that as sample food. Thanks to whyterabbyt for that idea!
At the same time, anything can be routed directly through one of 24 inputs on my audio interface or ADAT interfaces. If I don't want noise, I can get very clean recordings with an unnoticeable noise floor. I mean, I'm not always trying to sound like I recorded on an old 4-track... but sometimes I am.

Cheers Justin. The Teisco was my first analog synth, and 24 years later its still my favorite monosynth. I've enjoyed watching your modular system growing over the years. I'm tempted to jump into Eurorack world, but not sure I could cope with all those wiresjustin3am wrote:I love seeing that Teisco 60f in all of your studio shots over the years.thecontrolcentre wrote:I found some pictures of my setup during 1999 ... please forgive the hideous carpet
