I think its definatly not worth it, RePro 5 is great as it is :)

No, it IS a Pro-5 emulation, just a rev3, not rev2 or rev1, which use SSM chips instead of CEM.
Gotcha! :)

Those two things are not mutually exclusive...?

Is Repro 5 out now then?

I'm saying I would be REALLY HAPPY if rev 2 mode comes IN AN UPDATE, even if it takes a year or so after Repro-5 release. But my point is - it should definitely be there, it should happen. :)

Hmmm, P-5R2 and Cat SRM are the only ones I know which have been produced in numbers *and* are highly regarded... know more?
Well, technically, two aren't really full on synths and one was modular. The "produced in numbers" property is a killer though, LOL! That's going to be an issue with quite a few designs from that era.

The RSF Kobol made use of the 2040 as did the Digisound 80 Modular. The Steiner Parker EVI and the Crumar Performer 2 also used the 2040 AFAIK.

Whether it's worth it or not to you is a question that only you can answer, however, whether it made for a better sounding Prophet 5 is generally accepted. There was a really excellent comparison video at one point, between revs specifically. It's hard to say how much might have been other aspects of the Rev 1/2 design, but most people attribute the difference to the 2040 based filter. Personally, I don't care all that much about whether you implement a full rev 1/2 emulation, if it's not clear, I'm absolutely not a purist about emulations. I would like to hear your take on the Cat SRM 2040 filter and I haven't looked at schematics to see how different that is from the P5 Rev 1/2 filter. My Cat SRM is absolutely my favorite synth and so I'd love to see a model of that filter either in a standalone synth or in Diva.

As far as "built in numbers" though, I think that you might be underselling the community's perception. For example, the Steiner Parker Synthacon filter wasn't really built in numbers either and was fairly highly regarded as an interesting filter by the DIY community. It's now available in a commercial synth, of course, but AFAIK, it was very rare outside of DIY builds before the Brutes came out. It would be perfect for ACE (hint). BTW: I'm talking largely about the DIY community, not the perception at large which is much more colored by other biases.

The SSM2040 has been the subject of a lot of attention from a lot of talented builders. I'd be interested in your take on what's similar different across the original builds and emulations.

A quick look at the schematics reveals what one might expect TBH. Dave Smith didn't stray far from the reference design although it appears at first glance that each design uses slightly different gain in the resonance feedback. The RSF doesn't use an op-amp in the feedback and, of course, the SRM saves some money by not implementing voltage controlled Q. Beyond that though, there's more similarity to the reference designs than there are differences. Don't quote me on all of the details though, it was just a cursory glance.

Yes, after Zebra 3 is out, then they could do a paid upgrade called RePro-5 Rev 2

:hihi:

I definitely understand he don't want to do it, not the most inspiring thing to do I can imagine. I have always heard the rev 2 is the nicest sounding even though both are great. Some could be hype but I don't think that's completely true. The Motm 440 is probably the nicest filter I have used which is similar I think. (Minimoog probably has my favourite filter when thinking about it)

I'm super excited about the REV 3 and I'm never excited about software, that's not the point here.

Not the u-he army again :dog:

I've done plenty of research between these two since I was going to buy one years ago.
