I made a cut in the HF setting in Shimmer, a cut to the channel EQ HF and a tweak to the master EQ. The 9.5k stuff is still there, bit a little quieter. SoundCloud version only.Frantz wrote:
This is the problem I have with digital audio. With recordings of the 70s and 80s, if there were any extreme frequencies, they were rolled off by the mixing desk, tape, or the mastering process. But when I check out tracks here on KVR made ITB (In The Box), some of them unintentionally include frequencies that I find painful.

I would appreciate an EQ cut in that range. I'm sure no one else minds but I find those frequencies in your track unpleasant.

Working up the spectrograms now...

By increasing Spek's sensitivity (CTRL+SHIFT+DOWN), it becomes clear how the 9.5kHZ frequency range has been reduced in each successive version. The most recent version 3/18 is at the bottom.
The 9.5kHZ frequencies are still there. They are bright but they no longer seem shrill or harsh to me. I can now enjoy the track at full volume on my speakers now. Thanks, the sound design is wonderful!

heres a spek of my current wip. the first notable
difference is siesmic's track having more energy in the freq above
16k or so, and none at all in mine. also, mine has much less energy in the none percussive part under 5k (yellow). does it make a difference? let your ears decide! theres no right or wrong only preference. the mix still sounds great to my ears dispite the visual differences.

Thanks for listening and commenting, Jesse. Glad you liked itJesse Gorter wrote:Really cool stuff man
Nice spaced out beats. I would like to try my hands on such a piece someday, mine tend to get very busy. This has more patience to it.
It's odd really. Although this was the first piece I had made from scratch in over 2 years, it all came together really quickly. I was really relaxed about doing it. I suppose that helped.

Agreed. I've been Spek'ing various tracks and some have a fair amount of high frequencies that don't bother me. It's a nice tool but ultimately you have to mix with your ears, not your eyes.layzer wrote:let your ears decide! theres no right or wrong only preference.

Hi seismic.
Haven't been in the cafe for some time, but when I am and I see you've posted something I won't pass you by. But for this one maybe I should have.
Not trying to be a downer or pick on you or anyone for that matter...but I like to reply as much for efforts I think are below the artists talents as well as something exemplary.
I have a folder filled with 'ideas' in the form of .fxb files that open 'Chainer' projects ideas that I never took to the point of production where it might have been brought to be Cafe 'postable'.
I see this production in that respect. You started with an atmospheric idea and experimented with that for a time. I think you said you were thinking 'intro'?
Perfecting the atmosphere and developing it into a journey would have worked in itself, but I think you got bored and tried to 'package' it into a form that appears to complete it...but I think it only just made a mess of your atmospheric idea you started off with. (and like I said, i've been doing that for many yrs.)
Again, not trying to be a pest. I guess i'm saying...if we have to grab synths and a drum pattern that was basically a 'march' rhythm on top of something we spent hrs on just to give up on it and quickly create a package for it...it's maybe better to put it aside for the night and into that folder I call 'the shelf' and maybe open it another day.
I didn't read the pages of replies, but i'll guess they were mostly favorable...and that's sorta why I felt I wanted to share my thoughts and give some contrast.
Always glad to hear what your doing all the same mate.

PS: just read some of the replies and see many are about the HF.
Listening to the Soundcloud 2 times before I 1st replied I noticed it right off.
I have a sensitive ear that rings when there's a steady high pitch going on. I've created projects that have it throughout the piece...in the .wav file !
My best guess that it's a sorta 'foldover' byproduct of a nyquist sampling problem in the form of aliasing. I've never been able to see it, so it just a guess.
I suspect it had something to do with the PaulStretch in combination with something else. I only hear it in the opening section.

i enjoyed this very much. i don't think anything was compromised by the introduction of the beat, nor do i hear anything that sounds or gives me the feeling that you got 'bored' and chucked on the beats just to 'complete' it.
neil.

Gosh. That Spacetime Continuum album is 19 years old. I was a young whippersnapper when that was released

No. I haven't owned that setup since '85. These days 90% of my monitoring is done on the computer with my Pod Studio UX2 and the Rokit 5s. When I'm happy with that I reroute the audio to my Alpha6/Mission773 via a phono cable from the UX2 to the Alpha. I've been trying to get hold of a wireless DAC but they are not that easy to get hold of at the moment. Unless I want BluetoothFrantz wrote: If I recall correctly, you are monitoring using an old amp or speakers. There is a possibility that your sound system is rolling off the HFs and you are adding more to compensate.

OK, that's not an issue.seismic1 wrote:These days 90% of my monitoring is done on the computer with my Pod Studio UX2 and the Rokit 5s.
I do and I'm looking forward to seeing how this piece develops. This is only part 1.seismic1 wrote:Glad you liked the latest revision
