been avoiding studio, to try to save on energy.

Lots of studio maintenance. Updated firmware on Quantum, Helix rack and H9000. Fixed a few cables and replaced a few others. Need to rearrange some things so I'm ready to work on music when I take some vacation time next week.

Experimented with different ways to dirty up my FM, in a successful attempt to talk myself out of buying a Recovery Effects Mystic.
One thing I've noticed about early Yamaha YM chips and other sound chips, is fairly low resolution on the possible volume/modulation levels. I also suspect that a big part of the lofi FM flavor is a fairly low-res phase accumulator and/or resolution of the sine lookup table...
So I played with that.
The Wavetable oscillator in Bitwig Grid using the factory "FM Indices" wavetable, is a great example of that lower resolution. It's fine for plain sines. But slow it down and then crank up the WT index and you'll hear that same raspiness that classic DX synths get in those ranges. Awesome!
Step 2: decimate the control signal for the FM depth. Run the knob/envelope/etc. through a S+H clocked by an oscillator at low audio rates (adjusted to taste) before it goes into the WT index
Optionally stick an Average module in there to smooth it a little. You'll still probably want Izotope RX Declick or similar after the audio though.
Step 3: turn off the WT's own oscillator by setting the ratio to 0:1. Add a separate sawtooth (or triangle) oscillator, through a Lag module set somewhere in the 0.1 to 0.8ms range to remove any spikes, and into the WT's phase at 100% and also the Sync. That emulates a less perfect phase accumulator and gives you more waveshaping options; you can also PM this oscillator for more than 2-op FM.
I also played with this in Eurorack. I don't have any editable wavetable VCOs anymore, but several ways to do TZFM and PM. I found that running my FM index CV signal through Drezno to reduce it to 8 bits or less, and/or clocking Drezno from another oscillator to decimate it, worked extremely well with an FM Aid patch, and also quite nicely with Just Friends (which is already a little gnarly), or Rings in its FM mode (more subtly gnarly).
Trying to use that technique with Akemie's Castle is pretty redundant and doesn't add much to be honest. But this allows for several other flavors of grunge.

Nope, I never had an NW1. I had an E352, then an E370 (from beta testing), then back to an E352 for a while. Then Shapeshifter, which I like more overall even though its wavetable capabilities are less.Shabdahbriah wrote: Mon Dec 19, 2022 4:12 am In mentioning your not having a Wavetable synth any longer, didn't you have one of these?

Ah, well the NW1 is definitely (imho) more limited than any of those, in a hands-on 'sculpting' the sound sense... Shapeshifter demos I've heard sound amazing.foosnark wrote: Mon Dec 19, 2022 12:27 pmNope, I never had an NW1. I had an E352, then an E370 (from beta testing), then back to an E352 for a while. Congrats with achieving this:

Had a nice surprise that I could still get a coupon to buy the Korg Wavestate plugin cheap despite getting the hardware second hand. Assumed the previous owner had cashed in so nice to get it to play with.
Obviously the hardware's great, but just had 4 instances of the plugin running and the CPU barely broke a sweat. Going to be some fun to be had here I think. Most of the factory library is basic dance stuff, but I think it may suit building slow evolving ambient patches.

id imagine it's nice to be able to get a patch going, and not have to record it before repatching, just save to the vst
this future is pretty good really, even without jet packs.
