You can't be a synth god with such reasonable and well thought out opinions.

well, that was mostly TLDR, but the part about roland having their head up their ass resonated.
i still love their stuff and use the cloud instruments all the time.
that being said, whoever is in charge over there now is missing the boat most of the time.

"Up their own ass" does not mean "Head up their ass." They are different phrases. The former means pretension or self-importance, the latter implies a blindness. They are related, but they're not the same thing.N 4 LIFE wrote: Fri Oct 10, 2025 1:32 am well, that was mostly TLDR, but the part about roland having their head up their ass resonated.

So, the TR-909 is a good example. One could say that they had their head up their ass and couldn't read the market at the time, that is, people wanted sampling drum machines, but to say that they're up their own ass refers to the idea that they assumed that they weren't blind to the market but thought that they knew better. The latter is the right interpretation at the time.
So, what you get is brilliant for the time analog drum design for certain drums, notably the kick, that became classic because it ended up being used in a context not yet invented. As a product, it was a failure.
Same with the TB-303. The idea of accompanying a guitarist with something more than a drum machine wasn't intrinsically bad, but the idea that the best way to do that was with a wonky analog synth that really sounded nothing like a bass guitar was Roland being up their own ass thinking that their ideas were special. Another classic that was, at the time, a failure as a product. It's the difference between unintended comedy and bad comedy.
Roland is consistently "up their own ass," but it's arrogance, and pretension, not blindness or delusion, that is, they don't necessarily have their "head up their ass."
Anyway, it seems to me that you're just looking to slag on Roland. I may be critical of them, but their approach is not without merit and I think that the useful part of the discussion is about putting their products in context to understand why they are what they are.

Precisely. Roland makes way more money on Fantom's than anything the average KVR user is into.ghettosynth wrote: Fri Oct 10, 2025 2:59 am I may be critical of them, but their approach is not without merit and I think that the useful part of the discussion is about putting their products in context to understand why they are what they are.

Well yeah, they obviously didn't make enoughUncle E wrote: Fri Oct 10, 2025 3:24 amTR-1000's sold out in record time = missing the boat?N 4 LIFE wrote: Fri Oct 10, 2025 1:32 am well, that was mostly TLDR, but the part about roland having their head up their ass resonated.

The same with Nord. The biggest sellers are the keyboards we would consider boring.Uncle E wrote: Fri Oct 10, 2025 3:29 amPrecisely. I'm really happy to see Roland dipping their toes into getting back into non-modelled gear though. And it looks like this one was made with lots of afterthought.

It has per-step micro-timing for creating flams and other methods for finer resolution of step repeats, glitches, flams, etc.

I was asking you precisely because you’re a real person who has unbiased opinions. Lol.cryophonik wrote: Fri Oct 03, 2025 1:47 pmSorry, I'm not a "synthfluencer" and I'm not getting dragged into that game. The RYTM sounds great, the TR-1000 will sound great, and they are going to sound different, but that's all subjective.perpetual3 wrote: Fri Oct 03, 2025 9:10 am I would appreciate if you could comment on the sound quality between the Rytm and 1000. I’ve read lots of criticism over the Rytm regarding the bass drum and hats.

Again, I'm a musician and composer, not someone who sits around A/B'ing gear or trying to see how closely I can match one unit to another, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. The RYTM and TR-1000 are both analog synths and samplers, and the TR-1000 has some added instrument types (e.g., ACB, FM) that broaden its range pretty considerably. But, I don't think of either of them as having a limited range of sounds, especially not when you can use/add/layer/mangle/etc samples to get a virtually unlimited range of sounds. So, the question of "sound" is pretty much a moot point - they're both going to give me infinitely more range than I'll ever use in my songs.
On a side note, I put my RYTM mk2 up for sale after already selling all my other drum machines and grooveboxes, but so far I've only had interest from lowballers. I'm seriously considering just canceling the ads and keeping it, though. The TR-1000 is a better fit for me because it's more intuitive, has some additional features/capabilities that I really like, and I like the idea of one box to do it all, but I also just really like the RYTM a lot even though the way I use them makes it totally redundant. They are both a nice shade of industrial grey, so maybe that can be the deciding factor...
