Most mastering engineers know the compressed stuff is crap but don't say anything because of the economic realties of who is paying for mastering -- record companies. They're also getting crap (compressed) mixes they process to what limited degree they can, because sending these back isn't really an option. I'm not blaming them.shogger wrote:How many audio guys are in the lucky economical position to decide by non-monetary reasons which audio jobs they do? If you're in that lucky position:eduardo_b wrote:Well, those who want work do what the client wants, not what's best for the music.
It's the ultimate customer, the consumer, who can change this situation by not buying overly compressed music...but that's a whole different story. One mastering engineer has said the last Metallica album should have been titled Death by Mastering.
