Microsoft could just buy Cakewalk from Gibson, and start from there

Hmm, perhaps they can sort out the DirectSound latency problems with their own hardware & software combined.

Post

They already did that with WASAPI exclusive-mode ...
With DirectSound you don't have exclusive rights and share the sound card with other clients hence the higher latency.
But if you code a smart streaming routine for DirectSound you can get very close to 10 milliseconds without distorted sound playback.

I can go as low as 10.023 milliseconds with a buffer of 442 samples ( 441 + 1 sample for alignment ) at 44100 Hz samplerate and 32 bits per sample.

Hello gvala,

it's nice to know that Microsoft is directly interested in pro audio.

It would be interesting to know if MS projects will involve pro audio Hosts too...

Yes, I'm definitely alluding to a Host prototype/open-source extensions to bring Augmented Reality into pro audio world :)

Since MS is very involved in VR/AR nowadays, ( and if this MS project is not ultra-classified ), it would be nice to know if you're looking into that direction.

I wonder whatever happent to.......

I so wish someone would revamp/clone BarsnPipes (which MS bought and binned)
Angry Red Planet's Temper would have been the dogs danglies if it wasnt abandoned.
Still, it has a lot of good stuff that works fine that no other DAW has attempted. Eg. The modular shapes system that could be applied to realtime and non realtime stuff such as piano roll pattern drawing and automation
Amazon: why not use an alternative
