How do you get your synths to sound huge?

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

Hard to describe, but having other things in the mix be affected by the synth makes it sound huge, like a big guy pushing a little guy out of the way. Think changing an attribute (tone for example) on the synth knob and then something else in the mix follows in response. Having other sounds fall on to the synth sound and join it makes it sound big too. Really any reactions to the synth make it sound big.

Also, having the synth muted harshly by a low pass filter so that it sounds like it's in another room makes it sound huge compared to the rest of the mix as long as distance is implied.
