How to make that sound...

Post

Hello fellow synth enthusiasts,

I just re-registered (lost my login and e-mail years ago), but been lurking here for 10 years :-)

I don't know, if I'm able to share links with my first post, but thought this would be a good way to get started and help others on their synthesis path. I made this poster you can print in HiRes (up to A0 format), showing all the basic concepts. You can see my Insta account in the poster, if you would like to follow be for synth insights and of course #gearporn :D

Sounds interesting, would fit better the 'Sound Design' section.

Hey, Adam. I'll be teaching a sound design subject next year in a Videogame Design master. Your poster could be very handy to start one of the classes.

Do you mind if I use it in the classroom? Thanks!

That's a really nice job. Good layout!
Now I sincerely hope that your next project will be the same but for a 6 operator FM synth :hihi:

Nice work. Very useful to point at when trying to explain some basic synthesis concepts.

The FM bit is hard to catch in one picture. But this one ignores the "reflection" of "negative" frequencies back into the spectrum as phase inverted sines which can partially or fully phase cancel amplitudes of normal phased partials/sidebands in the spectrum. And off course the amount of modulation, causing more sidebands.

OK...this is hard to grasp in words. I'll see if I can find a better example picture then those in this relatively easy to comprehend ADSR FM8 tutorial.

Mmmm....hard to find a simple picture that says a lot....

But I mean something like this

Or this

The reflected phase inverted sidebands are depicted as having a negative amplitude. Hanging instead of standing. The resulting amplitudes of partials/sidebands is the absolute sum of the positive and negative partials.

Hope this makes sense...

I've attached the poster as a KVR attachment you can download here if anyone wants.

Thank you for your kind words! They made me happy in the morning. :-)

Please use my poster freely in your classrooms, presentations etc, just don't re-distribute commercially and, if it's not mandatory, please don't remove the logos. The FM pics you posted are nice too, I'll look into FM in the future, as far as making something visual.

Follow me on Instagram (adam.filter) for gear pics, synth insights and some fun stuff too :-) Also check out the company I work with developing plugins - 2getheraudio. We have a forum here on KVR.
